COLD SPRING – Police in Cold Spring came to the rescue of an injured woodchuck, and thanks to the officers, the thick woods badger is on its way to recovery.

On Tuesday morning, an officer on patrol was flagged down by a concerned resident reporting a “suspicious party” curled up on the sidewalk at Lunn Terrace in the village.

The officer immediately responded and discovered ‘the individual’ in question was a very cold woodchuck with a pet carrier left in a nearby snowbank.

The officer, who was not identified, utilized the abandoned carrier to secure the woodchuck and transport it to a local veterinary facility for care.

The officer’s report noted, “He was cooperative during transport and declined to comment.”

Later in the day, police reported the “furry patient was doing well.”

The veterinary clinic advised police that the woodchuck had a pelvic injury, but was on fluids and antibiotics, was alert, eating, moving around and resting comfortably in an incubator that police said was “significantly more comfortable than a sidewalk in February. All signs are pointing toward a full recovery.”
