The gold medal–winning United States women’s national ice hockey team has decided not to attend President Donald Trump’s upcoming State of the Union Address, respectfully declining the invitation due to previously scheduled academic and professional obligations.

In a public statement, a spokesperson for USA Hockey expressed gratitude for the recognition while explaining the team’s absence.

“We are sincerely grateful for the invitation extended to our gold medal–winning U.S. Women’s Hockey Team and deeply appreciate the recognition of their extraordinary achievement,” the spokesperson said. “However, due to the timing and previously scheduled academic and professional commitments following the Games, the athletes are unable to participate.”

The statement emphasized that the players were honored by the invitation and thankful that their historic accomplishment was acknowledged on such a prominent national stage.

The decision comes shortly after a landmark moment for American hockey. The U.S. women secured their gold medal with a hard-fought victory over their longtime rivals, Canada, delivering a performance that captivated fans and reinforced their dominance on the international stage.

Their triumph was followed by another historic achievement when the United States men’s national ice hockey team also captured gold in dramatic fashion, defeating Canada in a thrilling overtime showdown.

The victory marked the first Olympic gold medal for a U.S. men’s hockey team since the legendary Miracle on Ice at Lake Placid, a moment widely regarded as one of the greatest upsets in sports history.

Following the men’s victory, President Trump personally called into the team’s locker room to congratulate the players. During the call, he extended an invitation for them to attend the State of the Union address in Washington, D.C., praising their achievement as a proud moment for the country.

While speaking with the men’s team, Trump also acknowledged the women’s accomplishment and joked about the importance of inviting them as well.

“I must tell you, we’re going to have to bring the women’s team, you do know that,” Trump said, prompting laughter from those present.

He added humorously, “If I didn’t invite them, I do believe I probably would be impeached,” highlighting both the significance of their victory and the public attention surrounding their success.

Although the women’s team will not be in attendance, their historic gold medal run remains a defining moment in American sports. Their victory not only demonstrated elite athletic excellence but also inspired millions across the nation, cementing their legacy among the greatest teams in U.S. Olympic history.

Their decision to decline the invitation underscores the reality that many Olympic athletes must quickly transition back to school, careers, and personal responsibilities after the spotlight fades, even in the wake of extraordinary achievement.
