KENT – Advanced, hands-on training for ice safety was the order of the day when the Kent Fire Department hosted an Ice Rescue Technician course for Putnam’s emergency responders.

The 16-hour certification program focused on preparing emergency personnel to safely and effectively operate in hazardous winter environments.

Participants received comprehensive instruction in critical skills including ice awareness, self-rescue techniques, victim rescue operations, and coordinated multi-agency response in challenging ice and cold-water conditions. The training emphasized both individual proficiency and team-based operations, ensuring responders are ready to perform when seconds matter.

Kent Fire Chief Brennon Frowd explained the “specialized training is essential for protecting both our responders and the public during winter emergencies. Ice-related incidents are unpredictable and extremely dangerous. Through realistic, scenario-based training, our members and partnering agencies are better prepared to respond quickly and safely.”

Chief Frowd reminded the public, “As winter continues, we remind all residents: “NO ICE IS SAFE ICE! Caution must always be exercised when in or around water sources year-round. If an emergency arises, always remember to call 911.”
