ALBANY – A significant overhaul of the state DMV points system went into effect on Monday, targeting dangerous driving with much stricter penalties. Under the new rules, offenses like DWI or driving without a license will carry 11 points, enough to trigger an immediate license suspension and substantial fees. Construction zone speeding and failing to stop for a school bus are also seeing sharp increases, now jumping to eight points each.
The Sullivan County Clerk Russell Reeves says motorists should be mindful that any moving violation is expensive, but after Monday, it will cost you a lot more.
“What it means is a lot more people losing their licenses and an increase in conditional licenses.”
He is hopeful that these new measures will improve road safety.
“Enforcement is always a good thing, so we have police officers on the road all the time protecting us and protecting our roadways. So, hopefully it does what it’s set out to achieve.”
