Girl Scouts troops across the region are deep into cookie season, providing delicious goodies to everyone who looks forward to this sweet period of time every year.

Troop 65179 recently held a cookie booth at the Dunkin Donuts in Sterling that was a great success. They had many happy customers who purchased classic varieties at $6 a box including Thin Mints, Samoas, Do-si-dos, Trefoils, Tagalongs, and S’mores, additions in the last several years Lemon-Ups and gluten-free Toffee-tastic, and a brand new flavor that debuted this year, Exploremores, a rocky-road–inspired sandwich cookie filled with the flavors of chocolate, marshmallow, and almond-flavored crème.

The troop falls under the Girl Scouts of Central and Western Massachusetts umbrella, which empowers approximately 6,000 girls in grades K through 12 and supports over 3,000 adult volunteers in 186 towns and cities across central and western Massachusetts. This includes communities in Berkshire, Franklin, Hampden, and Hampshire counties, and specifically in Worcester County troops based in Ashburnham, Fitchburg, Lancaster, Leominster, Princeton, Sterling, and more.

Troop 65179 is made up of a dozen fourth grade girls who have been together since they were Daisies and are now Juniors — nine girls from Sterling, one from Princeton, and two from Leominster. Its leadership team is made up of two moms from Leominster who have daughters in the troop, Caitlin Leary and Alanna Malatos, and a mom of one of the girls from Sterling, Courtney Mankus, with support from other parents who are registered troop supporters.

They join upwards of three million Girl Scouts of the USA members from around the country who channel their inner entrepreneur annually during cookie season as a way to earn money for troop adventures and practice math and social skills.

“Cookie season teaches the girls about goal setting and really thinking about what they want to do with the money earned, so they know how many cookies we need to sell,” Mankus said.

She went on to say that “it has been fun to watch them grow with each cookie season.”

“As Daisies they needed help with counting money and knowing how much was owed and how to make change,” Mankus shared. “Lots of addition practice then they moved onto multiplication and could determine what was due a lot faster and with less help from the leaders. Now that they are so experienced, I anticipate they will be pretty self-sufficient at this year’s booths.”

The mom of two said the cookies booths “gives [the] girls the opportunity to boost their sales to meet their goals, raise funds for the troop, and have fun while doing it,” with their next booth scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 22 from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Walmart in Leominster.

“The Walmart booths are always exciting because we get a lot more traffic there,” Mankus said of the great location.
