TOWN OF RHINEBECK — The Town of Rhinebeck Planning Board has signed off on final plans for a SoHo House private members club at the former Grasmere Estate, clearing the way for construction to begin on what would be one of the most high-profile hospitality projects proposed in northern Dutchess County.
Town of Rhinebeck Planning Board Secretary Gretchen Smith confirmed the approval in a message to Mid-Hudson News: “The plans have been signed for the SoHo House project, which is the final step with the Planning Board process.”
SoHo House, a global members club brand, has announced plans for a countryside retreat in Rhinebeck on a 250-acre property known as Grasmere, describing the project as a restoration and reuse of historic buildings on the site. The project is expected to have 32 luxury rooms and cabins and a spa. The overnight accommodations could cost $1,000 per night. Local “day pass” access to the resort is expected to be available to those who purchase memberships.
The Grasmere site has been at the center of local attention since the private club concept became public, with project descriptions highlighting hospitality amenities typical of destination retreats.
Mid-Hudson News has reached out to the local property owner who plans on leasing the land as well as representatives from the SoHo House. Smith said questions about the construction plan and any tax benefits should be directed to other town officials. The town supervisor is out of the office until February 20.
The SoHo House approval lands amid broader debate in the area over large-scale resort proposals and their potential impacts on traffic, housing, infrastructure and the rural character of the Hudson Valley. Several resort-style developments have been proposed in and around Rhinebeck and neighboring Town of Clinton, including a proposed Six Senses retreat that has drawn intense public scrutiny and a lawsuit.
