TOWNSEND — The Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary to Townsend Post No. 6538 is sponsoring the three-dimensional Patriotic Art Contest in partnership with the VFW Auxiliary Department of Massachusetts and the VFW of the United States Auxiliary.

The contest encourages high school students to express patriotism through art while competing for cash awards and educational scholarships.

Locally, the Townsend VFW Auxiliary will award $50 for first place, $30 for second, and $20 for third. The winning entry advances to the state competition, offering $200 for first place and $100 for second. The state winner moves on to the national level, where scholarships of $2,500, $1,500, $1,000, and $500 will be awarded. First- through third-place national winners may be announced on VFW Auxiliary National social media and displayed at the National Convention.

The contest is open to students in grades nine through twelve enrolled in public, private or parochial schools, or who are home-schooled. Students must be lawful U.S. permanent residents or have a pending application and intend to become U.S. citizens. Foreign exchange students, students age 20 or older, GED students and adult education students are not eligible.

Acceptable three-dimensional media include stone, clay, metal, wood, fabric, papier-mâché, pottery, mixed media or other taught materials. Entries may not exceed 18 inches in any direction or weigh more than 5 pounds.

Digital art, photography, weapons, 3-D printed art and jewelry will not be accepted.

Any artwork featuring the American flag must comply with the Federal Flag Code.

Entries must be completed during the current school year, and each student may submit one entry.

Submissions must include a typed or legibly printed artist statement and explanation of the creative process (250 words or fewer), a completed 2025-2026 entry form, and at least two photographs of the finished artwork.

Contest applications and information are available from high school art teachers or from Betty Mae Tenney of the VFW Auxiliary to Townsend Post No. 6538.

Judging will be based on originality, presentation, patriotism, clarity of ideas, design technique and overall impact.

All entries must be submitted to VFW Auxiliary to Townsend Post No. 6538 President Betty Mae Tenney by March 31. To arrange submission, call 978-597-6495 or 978-665-4026.
