CHESTER – Joined by Orange County police chiefs and other elected officials, Senator James Skoufis (D, Cornwall) announced $380,000 in state funding to help with the accreditation of seven police departments.

“This is the highest level of accreditation,” said Skoufis, “the most recognized and renowned accreditation here on New York State with the highest standards.”

The accreditation for the seven departments, for the City of Port Jervis, the towns of Chester, Goshen, Mount Hope, Tuxedo and the villages of Goshen and Tuxedo Park, is voluntary. And these seven departments join 11 other departments already accredited by the state.

The funding obtained by Skoufis addresses the training, administration and operations of these departments, and the money is being spent on materials such as vehicles, training equipment and computers.

“The state set 133 standards to make sure that police departments are doing what is expected of them,” said Dominick Blasko, chief of the Town of Crawford Police Department and president of the Police Chiefs of Orange County. “And it’s clear-cut policies. And you fulfill those procedures. They come down and evaluate you to make sure you’re following the industry standards.”
