A Russian airstrike killed an 11-year-old girl and her mother and wounded 14 other people on Tuesday in Ukrainian-controlled territory in eastern Ukraine’s Donetsk region, regional officials said.

The attack struck the city of Sloviansk, where a 7-year-old girl was among those injured, according to Vadym Filashkin, the governor of Donetsk region. Filashkin reported the casualties in a statement posted on the Telegram messaging app.

Ukrainian police said the bodies of the woman and child were recovered from beneath the rubble of a damaged building. Authorities released images showing a severely damaged structure and emergency responders assisting an injured person inside an ambulance.

Sloviansk and the nearby city of Kramatorsk are considered key defensive centers for Ukrainian forces and are located close to the front line. Both cities have been frequent targets of Russian strikes since the early stages of the conflict.

The attack comes as fighting continues across eastern Ukraine, where Russian forces control much of the Donetsk region but have been unable to seize the entire territory. Ukrainian officials say Russia is pressing Kyiv to relinquish control of the remaining roughly 20 percent of the region still held by Ukraine as part of potential peace discussions, a demand Ukrainian authorities have rejected.

There was no immediate comment from Russian officials regarding the strike. Both Moscow and Kyiv have repeatedly denied deliberately targeting civilians in the conflict, which began with Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

The situation in eastern Ukraine remains volatile, with civilian areas near the front line continuing to face regular air and artillery attacks as the war enters its fourth year.
