San Francisco 49ers defensive lineman Keion White was shot in the ankle early Monday morning and underwent surgery later in the day, according to team officials and police.
In a statement, the 49ers said White “was a victim of a shooting and sustained a bullet wound to his ankle this morning in San Francisco.” The team confirmed that the injury required surgery Monday afternoon but did not provide further details about his condition or recovery timeline.
San Francisco police said officers responded to a reported shooting at a business in the city’s Mission District shortly after 4 a.m. Monday. When authorities arrived, they found a victim suffering from a gunshot wound. Paramedics transported the individual, later identified as White, to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Investigators said the shooting was preceded by an argument between two groups. No suspects have been identified, and no arrests have been announced. The department’s Strategic Investigation Unit is leading the investigation.
The incident occurred just hours after the 49ers publicly thanked the San Francisco Bay Area and local partners for helping host the Super Bowl at Levi’s Stadium in nearby Santa Clara on Sunday.
This marks the second time in two years that a 49ers player has been shot in San Francisco’s urban core. In August 2024, wide receiver Ricky Pearsall was shot and injured during an alleged attempted robbery in Union Square. Pearsall later made a full recovery.
White appeared in 11 games for the 49ers this season after being traded from the New England Patriots. Further updates on his condition are expected as the investigation continues.
