BREWSTER- Veterans residing within the Brewster School District will be getting an additional break on their tax bills now that the Brewster Board of Education has approved property tax exemptions for qualifying veterans.
Victor Karlsson, Assistant Superintendent for Finance & Operations, said the proposal was reviewed by the District’s Finance Committee and recommended to the full Board for its approval, completing the phase-in that began in 2023.
The approved level allows for an exemption amount of up to $48,000 of assessed value for basic wartime veterans, an additional $32,000 for veterans who served in a combat theatre or combat zone of operations, and up to $160,000 for veterans with a service-connected disability for the 2026-2027 fiscal year. Those amounts increase to $54,000, $36,000, and $180,000, respectively, for the 2027-2028 fiscal year.
As opposed to phasing in one year increments over four years to meet levels adopted in the towns of Carmel, Patterson, Southeast, as well as Putnam County, school trustees accelerated the phase-in so that by 2027-2028, the Brewster District will be at the same exemption levels as the other local governments.
Karlsson said the overall impact on non-veteran taxpayers per $100,000 of taxable assessed value would be $1.66 for Southeast residents, $2.45 for Patterson residents and $5.35 for Carmel residents owning property within the district.
School Board President Kerry Cunningham said the district was “pleased to provide additional property tax exemptions for qualifying veterans who deserve recognition for their selfless service to our country and we are pleased to recognize their contribution in this way.”
