Manchester United’s resurgence under Michael Carrick gathered further momentum on Saturday with a composed 2-0 victory over Tottenham at Old Trafford, extending the club’s winning streak in the Premier League to four matches and maintaining Carrick’s flawless start as head coach. A season that appeared to be drifting only weeks ago is now firmly back on course, with United climbing into fourth place and re-entering the conversation for a return to the Champions League.
Carrick, appointed last month following the dismissal of Ruben Amorim, has overseen a dramatic turnaround in results and mood. Initially handed a deal through the end of the season, the former United midfielder has quickly strengthened his case to remain in charge on a permanent basis. Saturday’s win marked the first time in two years that United have put together four consecutive league victories, underlining the scale of the revival.
United captain Bruno Fernandes praised Carrick’s connection to the club and his impact on the squad, pointing to the manager’s understanding of the demands and expectations that come with the role.
“Michael has won everything here and he knows what it means for these fans, what it means for the club to win and how much is needed to win in this football,” Fernandes said. “I think that adds something special to the team.”
The match itself tilted decisively in United’s favor midway through the first half when Tottenham captain Cristian Romero was sent off in the 29th minute for a dangerous challenge on Casemiro. Reduced to 10 men, Spurs struggled to contain United’s pressure, and the home side capitalized before the break.
Bryan Mbeumo opened the scoring in the 38th minute, firing a low finish from a corner to register his 10th goal of his debut season at the club. United continued to control the tempo after halftime, patiently probing against a depleted Tottenham side that found it difficult to mount a sustained response.
Fernandes sealed the result late on with a composed finish in the 81st minute, the ball deflecting off his shin and past the goalkeeper. The goal carried additional significance, marking his 200th goal involvement for United since joining the club in 2020, a milestone that underlined his influence during a period of transition.
Carrick’s approach has been credited with restoring confidence and clarity to the squad. Fernandes said the manager has struck a balance between structure and freedom, empowering players to make decisions on the pitch while taking responsibility for results.
“I think Michael came in with the right ideas of giving the players the responsibility, but some freedom to take the responsibility on the pitch, doing the decisions that were needed,” Fernandes said. “He’s very good with the words. I was sure that Michael could be a great manager, and he’s just showing it.”
The victory lifted United to 44 points, already surpassing last season’s total of 42 points across the entire campaign. With 17 league matches remaining, the 20-time English champion now has a realistic opportunity to secure a top-four finish after missing out on Champions League qualification for the past two years.
While Fernandes led by example for United, Tottenham’s afternoon was defined by frustration and indiscipline. Romero’s dismissal proved costly, especially after he had recently criticized the club’s injury situation and lack of available players. His red card was his sixth sending off since joining Spurs in 2021, the most by any Premier League player over that period, according to league statistics.
As the final whistle sounded, Old Trafford reflected a renewed sense of belief. Under Carrick, United have rediscovered resilience and purpose, transforming a faltering season into one filled with possibility and placing renewed pressure on the club’s hierarchy as it weighs its long-term managerial plans.
