Los Angeles Lakers center Jaxson Hayes was suspended one game by the NBA on Wednesday for pushing the Washington Wizards’ mascot before a game last week, the league announced.

The incident occurred during pregame introductions ahead of the Lakers’ 142-111 victory over Washington on Friday, when Hayes made contact with the mascot known as G-Wiz. Video of the moment circulated on social media, prompting league review. The NBA said the suspension was issued for unsportsmanlike conduct and that Hayes will serve it on Feb. 5, when Los Angeles hosts the Philadelphia 76ers.

Hayes appeared in the game despite the incident and provided a solid contribution off the bench. He finished with 10 points, three rebounds, one assist and one steal as the Lakers pulled away early and never trailed. Los Angeles improved its standing in the Western Conference with the win, while Washington continued a rebuilding season.

The 23-year-old center has carved out a rotation role with the Lakers as an energy big who runs the floor and protects the rim. Since joining the team in 2023, Hayes has been used primarily as a reserve, providing athleticism and depth behind the starting frontcourt.

Hayes entered the NBA as a first-round pick in the 2019 draft, selected by the Atlanta Hawks before his rights were immediately traded to the New Orleans Pelicans. He spent his first four seasons in New Orleans, showing flashes of potential while developing consistency. The Lakers signed him seeking frontcourt depth and a change-of-scenery opportunity.

The team did not announce a corresponding roster move, and Hayes is expected to be available following the suspension. League officials emphasized respect for game presentation staff and mascots across all arenas nationwide.
