Tech billionaire Elon Musk has voiced growing concerns about the United States’ sluggish progress in solar energy and overall electricity production, highlighting China’s rapid advancements in a series of posts on X.

Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, emphasized the stark contrast between the two nations’ energy trajectories, warning that America risks falling further behind in the global shift toward renewable power.

In a recent post on X, Musk stated, “China electricity generation is still growing super-fast, with solar being the largest incremental contributor, and will exceed America by a factor of 3X either this year or next.” This prediction underscores China’s explosive growth in clean energy, particularly solar, which has become the dominant force in its expanding electricity sector. Musk reposted data illustrating China’s commanding position, noting that in 2025, the country accounted for 33.2% of global electricity generation—more than double the United States’ share of approximately 14.2%. This equates to roughly one-third of the world’s total capacity, leaving the rest of the globe combined at 52.6%.

Musk’s comments align with his longstanding advocacy for accelerated renewable adoption. Over the past year, he has repeatedly praised China’s solar achievements while critiquing US complacency. For instance, he highlighted that China’s solar installations could power half of America if operated at US efficiency levels and noted the country’s annual solar production capacity exceeding 1,500 gigawatts, with deployments surpassing 1,000 gigawatts. He has called this a “wake-up call,” projecting that China’s solar output alone could surpass all US electricity sources combined within three to four years.

Experts attribute China’s lead to aggressive government policies, massive investments in manufacturing, and a focus on scaling renewables to meet surging demand. In contrast, the US has faced regulatory hurdles, supply chain issues, and political debates over energy transitions. Musk’s warnings come amid broader discussions on energy security and climate goals, as nations race to reduce fossil fuel dependence.

As global electricity needs rise with electrification and AI-driven data centers, Musk urges America to emulate China’s model. “Incredible progress by China in solar power! America needs to do the same,” he posted earlier. With China’s grid already dominating and solar fueling its expansion, Musk’s forecast signals a potential shift in geopolitical energy dynamics, challenging the US to innovate faster or risk obsolescence in the green energy era.
