VILLAGE OF NELSONVILLE- Residents in the Village of Nelsonville are currently banned from harboring “dangerous” animals including alligators, gorillas, ostriches, rhinoceroses, and tigers.
The village code also prohibits residents from allowing “horses, cows, goats, sheep, or other cattle or swine” to roam in public and prohibits certain dog behavior, such as loud barking or whining.
The Village Board has decided to update the antiquated code by banning all animals with the exception of domesticated pets. Those animals still on the prohibited list include bees, cows, ducks, roosters, horses and goats.
Discussion also centered on banning residents from allowing “horses, cows, goats, sheep or other cattle or swine” to roam in public.
Animals defined as being “non-wild or non livestock quartered within a residence and kept for non-agricultural purposes” such as chickens or bees would be permitted.
A requirement that residents license their dogs would be removed, but restrictions on their behavior in public would remain, along with penalties of up to $250 and 15 days in jail for violations.
Officials explained the changes were meant not to over regulate but to result in uniformity in Putnam’s smallest municipality.
