LA JOLLA — A 24-year-old driver was seriously injured today when she collided broadside with the rear of a semi-tractor trailer, prompting an extrication in San Diego’s Torrey Pines neighborhood.

The crash happened around 2:50 a.m. Thursday, when the driver of a 2024 Honda Civic crashed into the trailer of a 2021 Freightliner driven by a 58-year-old man who made a left turn from North Torrey Pines Road to Scripps Clinic South Driveway, according to the San Diego Police Department.

Police said the driver of the Honda ran a red light while traveling in the No. 1 lane of 10600 North Torrey Pines, while the semi driver turned during a green light.

The Honda became wedged underneath the trailer, and the driver had to be extricated by personnel from the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.

She was taken by ambulance to a hospital, where she was treated for life-threatening injuries. The driver of the semi was not injured, police said.

It was unclear whether driving under the influence was a factor in the Honda driver’s case, but the cause of the crash was under investigation.
