POUGHKEEPSIE – The City of Poughkeepsie’s plan to remove tons of snow from Main Street and the surrounding areas on Tuesday night made tremendous progress early in the evening. Late Tuesday night, the city’s front-end loader, equipped with a snowblower, stopped working, leaving several city and outside contractor dump trucks sitting idle, waiting for snow to haul.
The work early in the evening began on Main Street, with the loader filling the staged trucks. Once filled, the trucks hauled the snow up to College Hill Park and dumped it there before returning. The crews were making great progress and even cleaned up around City Hall.
As the loader/blower and trucks lined up across from the MJN Convention Center around 11:15 p.m. to remove snow from the area, problems once again stalled the city’s progress. The drive shaft of the snowblower attachment on the loader stopped working, bringing the work to a standstill, and leaving at least six dump trucks staged around the bus depot, waiting to haul snow away. The loader drove away, heading toward the DPW garage, in hopes of having repairs made.
A second loader and skid steer arrived at Civic Center Plaza after midnight and began scooping buckets of snow into the trucks to be taken to the park. The alternative plan slowed the work by an exponential factor.
A city pickup truck arrived just before 1 a.m. to begin moving snow from the Dutchess County Transit Hub, which the city is responsible for.
The snow removal was expected to continue until 7 a.m.
