Journalist James O’Keefe said he received a death threat from an unknown sender while reporting from Minneapolis amid demonstrations following an ICE-involved shooting, describing a chaotic and violent encounter that forced his team to flee the area.
O’Keefe said he was present near the scene Saturday morning as events surrounding the shooting of Alex Pretti unfolded and that he and his crew were confronted by a large group while attempting to document the situation. Speaking on camera from the city, O’Keefe said the group surrounded them as tensions escalated.
“I was at the scene of the shooting covering it this morning and basically we barely got out of there alive,” O’Keefe said.
According to O’Keefe, several hundred people encircled his team and began throwing objects. “There were a few hundred that surrounded us, started throwing ICE bottles at us. …A few hit us, hit our vehicle,” he said.
He added that the confrontation became physical as the group closed in. “They were starting to rip off my bulletproof vest, so we got out of there,” O’Keefe said. “We were followed, we were tailed, and here we are right now.”
Footage of O’Keefe recounting the incident was shared publicly in an X post.
O’Keefe later displayed what he described as a threatening text message sent from an unfamiliar number after the confrontation. Reading the message aloud, he said it warned his team to leave the city or face lethal consequences.
“We just got this message and it says, ‘We know that you’re in Minneapolis, you’re with O’Keefe and his crew of Nazis. You’re in a white Ford, license plate *** from Florida. You have one hour to leave or you’re dead,’” O’Keefe said.
Images of the message and O’Keefe’s account of receiving it were also shared in a second X post
