MAHOPAC FALLS – A mail carrier assigned to the Mahopac Post Office escaped injury Wednesday when his mail truck caught fire outside a residence on Varna Lane in the Mahopac Falls section of the Town of Carmel.
The unidentified driver called 911 when the vehicle stalled and burst into flames. Mahopac Falls Fire Department personnel rushed to the scene and extinguished the blaze but not before the truck and most of its contents were destroyed.
Authorities said a fuel spill entered a storm drain. The State Department of Environmental Conservation was notified and responded to address the situation.
No injuries were reported to firefighting personnel.
Carmel Police assisted at the scene along with the Putnam County Fire Investigation Team.
Although Mahopac Falls has its own post office, deliveries to residences and businesses in the hamlet of Mahopac Falls are handled by the Mahopac Post Office.
