Police in Los Angeles are investigating an incident in which a driver appeared to steer a U-Haul truck into a crowd gathered Sunday for a protest supporting anti-government demonstrators in Iran.
Hundreds of people had assembled in the Westwood neighborhood for a march expressing solidarity with Iranians protesting their government, according to a report by NBC4 Los Angeles. During the demonstration, a box truck was seen moving through the crowd, prompting alarm among protesters and bystanders.
Video from the scene shows the truck advancing into an area where demonstrators were clustered, as police and emergency personnel responded. Authorities said they were investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident, which was captured in footage shared by local media, including a segment aired by Fox News.
Officials have not publicly identified the driver, and it was not immediately clear whether anyone was injured. Law enforcement remained on scene as investigators worked to determine how the truck entered the crowd and whether the act was intentional.
The protest in Los Angeles was part of a series of demonstrations across the United States in response to ongoing unrest in Iran. The U.S.-based Human Rights Activists News Agency has reported that at least 583 people have been killed since protests erupted there roughly two weeks ago, figures cited by activists monitoring the crackdown.
Authorities said the investigation into the Los Angeles incident is ongoing and that additional information would be released as it becomes available.
