DEAR BONNIE: How can I enjoy the holidays when I am missing my family who have gone to heaven? It’s just not the same and I find myself walking around crying. How can I enjoy the holidays and still honor my loved ones who have passed? This year was especially hard as my dad passed away this year, and he was my person in life who always believed in me. Thanks Clark
DEAR CLARK: I, too, know that feeling of missing our families because they are no longer in the physical world with us. And it’s hard. The holiday season can be a bittersweet time when you’re missing loved ones. While traditions, gatherings, and festivities may remind you of their absence, it’s important to remember that taking care of yourself is both healing and honoring to their memory. Here are three meaningful ways you can practice self-love during the holidays when you are missing loved ones in heaven.
Find a way to celebrate your loved one’s memory in a way that feels comforting and personal. You could light a candle in their honor, make their favorite dish, play a song they loved, or set aside a moment of quiet reflection. Creating a simple ritual or tribute can help you feel connected to them and bring a sense of peace amid the holiday bustle.
Grief is a natural part of missing someone, especially during meaningful times like the holidays. Give yourself permission to feel whatever comes up — sadness, longing, or even joy as you recall happy memories. Treat yourself with kindness, avoiding self-judgment. Remember that it’s OK to experience a range of emotions and that you deserve comfort and understanding.
While it’s important to honor your feelings, you don’t have to navigate them alone. Reach out to friends, family, support groups, or a counselor who can listen and provide encouragement. Even a heartfelt conversation or a shared memory can lighten your burden and remind you that you’re not alone in your journey. Surrounding yourself with supportive people is a powerful act of self-love.
Holidays are an opportunity to cherish the memories of those you miss while also caring for yourself. By creating special rituals, practicing compassion, and seeking connection, you honor your loved ones and nurture your own heart. Remember, self-love is one of the greatest gifts you can give yourself during this season. If you feel like you would like to have a sacred connection, reach out to a medium that you can trust and seek peacefulness while bringing through your loved ones on the other side. Remember they are not really gone but just a breath away.
