TOWNSEND – Townsend Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 6538 and its auxiliary have announced the winners in their Patriot’s Pen Essay Contest for students in grades six through eight.

A total of 17 students entered the local competition, including 16 students from Immaculate Heart of Mary School in Still River and one student from Lunenburg Middle School. This year’s theme was “How Are You Showing Patriotism and Support for Our Country?”

First place in the local contest was awarded to Madeleine Chapdelaine, a seventh-grade student, who will receive a $100 award. Second place went to eighth-grader Nicholas Monahan, who will receive $70, and third place was earned by eighth-grader Fianna Rochman, who will receive $40. All three winners attend Immaculate Heart of Mary School.

The local awards will be presented at an Awards Ceremony and Open House to be held at the Townsend VFW at the end of the school year.

Under the rules of the Patriot’s Pen Contest, local VFW posts and their auxiliaries may submit one entry to the district level of competition for every 15 entries received locally. As a result, the essays submitted by Chapdelaine and Monahan were advanced to the District No. 15 VFW and VFW Auxiliary competition.

At the district level, Chapdelaine’s essay placed first, earning her an additional $100 award, while Monahan’s entry placed second, for which he will receive a $75 award.

As the first-place District No. 15 Patriot’s Pen Contest winner, Chapdelaine, along with her parents, will be invited guests at the Department of Massachusetts VFW and VFW Auxiliary Voice of Democracy and Patriot’s Pen Awards Banquet. The event will be held in Sturbridge in January, where the 10 district winners in each contest will be honored.
