WARSAW — Polish fighter jets scrambled Thursday to intercept and visually identify a Russian reconnaissance plane operating near Polish airspace over the Baltic Sea, the country’s military announced. The incident is the latest in a series of airspace provocations by Russian aircraft, keeping NATO’s eastern members on high alert.

“This morning, over the international waters of the Baltic Sea, Polish fighter jets intercepted, visually identified, and escorted from their area of responsibility a Russian reconnaissance aircraft flying near the borders of Polish airspace,” the Polish Army stated.

Escalating Tensions on NATO’s Eastern Flank

The interception follows September’s airspace violations, when three Russian military jets breached Estonia’s airspace for 12 minutes, just days after more than 20 Russian drones entered Polish airspace. These incidents have prompted NATO allies to increase aerial surveillance and rapid-response measures.

Mysterious Balloons Raise Additional Concerns

Overnight, Polish authorities detected unidentified objects crossing into Polish airspace from Belarus. After analysis, the military determined they were “most likely smuggling balloons,” drifting with wind patterns. As a precaution, civilian air traffic was temporarily restricted over northeast Poland’s Podlaskie region, which borders Belarus, to “ensure security.”

NATO’s Vigilance Amid Russian Aggression

Poland’s response underscores NATO’s heightened state of readiness along its eastern frontier, where Russian military activity—from reconnaissance flights to drone incursions—has become increasingly frequent. The alliance has bolstered air policing missions and intelligence-sharing to counter potential threats.

The latest interception comes as Moscow continues testing NATO’s defenses, raising concerns about escalation in the Baltic region. With Poland and its allies maintaining a firm stance, the incident serves as a reminder of the volatile security landscape in Eastern Europe.
