CARMEL – An OnStar notification forwarded to the Putnam 911 Dispatch Center reported a rollover crash near Putnam Hospital Center with entrapment and no contact with the driver sent emergency crews from throughout eastern Putnam to the scene Tuesday afternoon.
First responders converged on a wooded area along Stoneleigh Avenue near Vista-on-the-Lake and found a heavily damaged Cadillac down a steep embankment with its lone occupant unconscious and pinned inside.
Due to the vehicle’s position and challenging terrain, a coordinated technical rescue operation was initiated. Firefighters, EMS, and law enforcement personnel worked together to stabilize the vehicle, safely access the patient, and perform a controlled extrication using specialized equipment and rope rescue techniques.

Carmel Assistant Fire Chief Vincent Ruggiero who was incident commander praised the mutual aid response. “The incident highlights the importance of interagency cooperation, advanced training, and preparedness when responding to complex rescue situations. The teamwork displayed by all involved ensured a safe and effective outcome under difficult conditions.”
Stoneleigh Avenue was closed to traffic for over an hour while the rescue operation was underway.
The cause of the accident remains under investigation.
Among the first responders on the scene were Carmel Police, Carmel firefighters, the Carmel Volunteer Ambulance Corps, an Empress Paramedic, Brewster Fire Department and Rescue Squad members, Putnam Sheriff’s Department personnel in addition to manpower and equipment from the Putnam Department of Public Works.
