WASHINGTON – Congressman Pat Ryan’s (D, NY-18) bill that would ban any new barges carrying crude oil or other dangerous substances from a ‘parking’ on the Hudson River has been signed into law by the president.
Ryan’s two-year effort was to prevent contamination on the waterway that more than 100,000 residents use for their drinking water.
“For far too long, big corporations have polluted and put at risk our precious river in pursuit of profits. But not anymore,” he said. “The Hudson is more than a river – it’s the lifeblood and the heartbeat of our community.”
Scenic Hudson and Riverkeeper pushed for the legislation as did the Hudson 7, an intermunicipal council representing seven Mid-Hudson communities in Ulster and Dutchess counties that get their water from the river.
