POUGHKEEPSIE — Dutchess County Executive Sue Serino marked the 10th anniversary of the County’s ThinkDIFFERENTLY initiative during a special commemoration at the Bardavon 1869 Opera House, held in conjunction with the county’s annual sensory-friendly performance of “The Nutcracker.”

“For the past decade, ThinkDIFFERENTLY has helped make Dutchess County a more welcoming and inclusive place for people of all abilities,” Serino said, noting the initiative aligns with the County’s Think Accessible efforts.

Launched in 2015 by then-County Executive Marc Molinaro, ThinkDIFFERENTLY encourages residents, businesses and municipalities to adopt inclusive practices for individuals with intellectual, developmental and physical disabilities. More than 100 communities across New York State, along with several nationwide, have adopted the initiative’s philosophy.

Serino was joined at the event by All Abilities Program Director Dana Hopkins, Molinaro, families, community partners and disability service organizations to reflect on the program’s impact over the past decade.

The county also highlighted its Think Accessible initiative, which focuses on improving physical accessibility for small businesses and municipalities. Earlier this month, the county announced the first businesses to earn Think Accessible Community Certification.

The commemoration concluded with a one-hour, no-shush performance of “The Nutcracker” by the New Paltz Ballet Theatre. Bardavon staff adjusted lighting and sound to provide a relaxed, sensory-friendly experience for attendees.
