WARWICK – Investigators continue to look into the cause of a fire in one of the lithium-ion battery storage units at the Convergent site at 28 Church Street in the Village of Warwick.
The fire was reported at about 10:19 Friday night bringing in the Warwick fire and Police Departments to the scene along with the Orange County Hazardous Materials Unit and Emergency Services.
The haz-mat team was on the scene to monitor air quality and there were no reports of danger to the community.
A Convergent spokesperson said the system has been idled until the company can enter the site and learn more about what happened.
The fire was contained to only one container.
“Our systems are monitored 24/7 through a mixture of automated sensors and human monitored cameras and controls,” the spokesperson said. “If certain alarms trigger, the system automatically shuts down, as happened here. Human operators have a manual ‘emergency stop,’ which our operator then activated.”
The company official said it was “too early to speculate what caused the incident” and they will continue to work closely with the local police, fire and village officials to determine the cause.
