MONTICELLO – By a five-to-three vote with one absent, the Sullivan County Legislature on Thursday adopted the 2026 budget of $305.7 million.

The spending plan falls below the state tax cap.

Budget talks initially saw a tax rate increase of nine percent, but that was whittled down to two percent.

Legislature Chairwoman Nadia Rajsz said the county must be cautious about it spending going forward.

“With the federal government and their cuts and the state not knowing where we’re going, we don’t know when their budget is going to come out, it’s just a variety of issues that has led us to this very bad space,” she said. “People were not going to buy the nine percent increase. They did not want to hear it, they didn’t want see it, they came out in droves.”

The budget includes funding for road and bridgework, capital projects at SUNY Sullivan, law enforcement, and rehabilitation on areas of the O&W Rail Trail, among other things.
