Oscar Cluff delivered a flawless performance and Braden Smith added another chapter to his record-setting career Saturday as sixth-ranked Purdue rolled past Marquette 79–59, turning the matchup into a statement win after last week’s setback.
Cluff did not miss a shot, making all nine of his attempts from the field and finishing with a season-high 22 points. He also pulled down 11 rebounds for his second consecutive double-double, providing a dominant presence inside as Purdue controlled the game from start to finish.
Smith reached a rare milestone almost immediately. Just 12 seconds into the game, he found Fletcher Loyer for a 3-pointer, a pass that pushed Smith into an exclusive statistical club. With that assist, Smith became only the second player in Division I men’s basketball history to record at least 1,500 points, 850 assists and 550 rebounds in a career. The only other player to reach those marks was D.J. Cooper during his time at Ohio from 2009 to 2013.
Smith finished the afternoon with seven points, 10 assists and five rebounds, pushing his career totals to 1,515 points, 859 assists and 759 rebounds. Loyer added 15 points, complementing Cluff’s interior scoring with timely perimeter shooting.
Purdue improved to 10-1 overall and 2-0 in Big Ten play, bouncing back convincingly after suffering a 23-point home loss to then-No. 10 Iowa State a week earlier. The Boilermakers showed renewed focus and balance, dictating the tempo on both ends of the floor.
Marquette, now 5-6, struggled to keep pace offensively. Royce Parham led the Golden Eagles with 19 points, while Chase Ross added 10. As a team, Marquette endured a cold shooting night, connecting on just 8 of 31 attempts from beyond the arc and failing to generate consistent scoring rhythm. It marked the second straight Saturday loss by 20 points for the Golden Eagles.
Purdue seized control midway through the first half with a 12-0 run that turned an early contest into a comfortable advantage, stretching the lead to 21-8. The Boilermakers continued to apply pressure and closed the half with another surge, scoring nine straight points to carry a commanding 37-19 lead into the break.
Any hope of a Marquette comeback quickly faded early in the second half. Cluff took over, scoring 13 consecutive points for Purdue in a dominant stretch that highlighted his efficiency and physicality. By the time that run ended, the Boilermakers had built a 53-29 lead, effectively putting the game out of reach.
Purdue’s defense also played a key role, limiting Marquette’s clean looks and forcing tough shots throughout the afternoon. The Boilermakers’ ability to control the boards and convert efficiently on offense kept the Golden Eagles from finding momentum.
Marquette will look to regroup as it opens Big East play at home against Georgetown on Wednesday. Purdue, meanwhile, has a week-long break before returning to action in a high-profile matchup against No. 21 Auburn in Indianapolis next Saturday, an opportunity to further solidify its standing among the nation’s elite.
