TOWNSEND — Townsend VFW Post No. 6538 and Pepperell VFW Post No. 3291 — along with their Auxiliaries — are pleased to announce the winners of this year’s Voice of Democracy Patriotic Audio Essay Competition for students in grades 9 through 12.

This year’s theme was “How Are You Showing Patriotism and Support for Our Country?”

Information about this national VFW contest — which offers prizes at the local, district, state, and national levels — was sent to administrators and faculty at six area high schools.

Eighteen students from the Immaculate Heart of Mary School in Still River entered the local competition.

Sophia Ostrowski’s entry placed first in the local competition and she will receive a $150 award for that accomplishment.

Olivia Harriman’s entry placed second and she will receive a $100 award and Cecily Rochman placed third in the local competition and will receive a $50 award.

Under contest rules, the Townsend and Pepperell VFW Posts and their Auxiliaries were allowed to advance one entry to the district level for every 15 (or thereof) received locally.

As a result, both Sophia Ostrowki’s and Olivia Harriman’s essays were submitted to the District 15 competition.

At the district level Olivia Harriman’s entry earned first place, and she will receive an additional $150 award.

She and her parents will be invited to attend the Department of Massachusetts VFW and VFW Auxiliary Voice of Democracy and Patriot’s Pen Awards Banquet in January, where the 10 district winners from each contest will be honored.
