KINGSTON – Two committees of the Ulster County Legislature have given their support to establishing a $500,000 capital project to purchase UCAT bus shelters.

Deputy County Executive Amanda LaValle presented the plan to the Public Works and Capital Projects Committee on Monday.

“This will just allow us to establish the capital so that we can start doing some shelters in more known areas including a larger shelter at Development Court, which is currently seeing more folks waiting there for buses. And then we will be able to move from there, and also in quarter-one of 2026 we will be doing a lot of work on establishing a plan for engaging with municipalities and looking at other high need shelter locations,” she said.

Legislator Kathy Nolan, chair of the public works committee, suggested they also explore purchasing mobile shelters that could be moved around to accommodate need.

The Housing and Transportation Committee approved the bus shelter plan earlier this month.
