LANCASTER — The Thayer Memorial Library invites the community to step back in time with “A Victorian Christmas”, a live musical performance to be held from 11 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 13, at the library, located at 717 Main St.

The performance will be led by Diane Taraz, a Boston-based singer, songwriter, historian, and author known for bringing history to life through music.

Dressed in the ornate fashions of the mid-1800s — including a hoop-skirted gown made from more than seven yards of fabric — Taraz will guide the audience through Christmas songs popular in the Victorian era, when many beloved carols were first written or rediscovered.

Taraz writes songs and breathes new life into traditional ones. Her elegant voice brings out the essence of whatever style she presents — folk, jazz, blues, standards, or classical pieces. She plays Taylor and Santa Cruz guitars and keeps taking her lap dulcimer to unexpected places.

She is the author of “Across the Wild Atlantic — Tracing a Family Through 400 Years”, “Daughter of the Waves, the Victorian Life of Celia Laighton Thaxter”, and “Candace — Imagining the Life of a Woman Enslaved in 18th-Century New England”.

“The event promises a warm, festive atmosphere with plenty of opportunities for audience sing-alongs,” said Rachel Rosengard, Assistant Director/Adult Services Librarian, Thayer Memorial Library.

Space is limited; registration is encouraged.
