President Donald Trump has delivered a somber update following the shocking shooting near the White House that left two National Guardsmen wounded and one ultimately dead.

Speaking aboard Air Force One on Sunday, Trump confirmed that 24-year-old National Guardsman Andrew Wolfe is “fighting for his life” after sustaining critical injuries during the attack in Washington, DC.

When a reporter asked whether he had spoken with Wolfe’s family, Trump said he had spoken with the families of both victims.

“I have spoken to both families,” Trump said. “They’re devastated. Does that make sense to you?”

He went on to praise Wolfe’s parents, describing them as “unbelievably great people, highly religious people” who are earnestly praying for their son’s recovery.

Trump added that the family is asking the nation to join them in prayer, expressing hope that Wolfe still “has a chance to make it.”

During the exchange, Trump also confirmed the tragic death of U.S. Army Specialist Sarah Beckstrom, a 20-year-old member of the West Virginia National Guard who was also shot in the attack. Trump had announced her passing earlier on Thursday.

The shooting, which left three people injured, triggered an immediate lockdown of the White House, according to earlier reports. At a Thursday press conference, U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeannine Pirro identified Beckstrom and Wolfe as the victims and revealed that they had been sworn in less than 24 hours before the attack took place.

Authorities have since identified the suspect as 29-year-old Rahmanullah Lakanwal, an Afghan national who reportedly entered the United States under former President Joe Biden’s Operation Allies Welcome program. CIA Director John Ratcliffe disclosed that Lakanwal had previously worked with the agency “as a member of a partner force in Kandahar, Afghanistan.”

As Wolfe continues to battle for his life, Trump emphasized the strength of his family’s faith and their determination to stay hopeful.

The nation now watches closely, united in prayer for the young Guardsman’s recovery.
