From ancient times to the present, the Dragon Deity Clan, in the form of dragons and through various transformed manifestations, has dwelt in the mountains, seas, lakes, and rivers throughout the world—in flowing streams and valleys, marshes and wetlands, ponds and shallow bays, in subterranean springs, and even in the waters of wells.
Their purpose is to safeguard all living beings, including humanity—summoning winds and calling forth rain, ensuring favorable weather, and guiding all sentient beings to seek good fortune and avoid calamity.
As the saying goes: "A mountain need not be high—if there are immortals upon it, it shall be renowned. Waters need not be deep—if there are dragons within them, they shall possess spiritual power." (From "Inscription on My Humble Dwelling" by Liu Yuxi of the Tang Dynasty.)
Dragons drink only from sweet springs and rest only in spiritual waters. Even where there is but a small puddle, so long as it is flowing living water, the form of a dragon may be found there.
Yet the catastrophe of the Dragon Deity Clan stems from modern humanity's reckless reclamation and felling of mountain forests, the over-development of the plains, and from unrighteous geomancers (that is, fengshui masters) and their lack of virtue and their greed.
In traditional fengshui teachings, mountain ranges are dragon veins, forests are the dragon's skin and fur, flowing waters are the source of the dragon's life, and clouds and mists are the spiritual essence that the dragon gathers.
When mountain ranges are damaged, the Dragon Deities are wounded; once their foundations have been severed, the dragons' spiritual essence disperses, and they can no longer protect the living beings of that region.
Without the protection of the dragons' spiritual essence, what remains of the mountain ranges falls under the threat of mudslides—when heavy rains come, great boulders tumble down, and the earth crumbles into ruin.
