It teaches kids how to manage negative self-talk using positive affirmations and guides them through a relaxation exercise involving visualization to find a sense of inner peace and happiness.
Hello everyone.
Welcome to the Cosmic Kids Zen Den,
your place to feel all calm and relaxed
and to help our minds stay healthy and happy.
First, let's get comfy.
Sitting on our bottoms, legs crossed
and a long straight back,
we rest our hands on our knees
and take a big deep breath
in through our nose,
out through our mouth.
Now, let's get the Zen Den ready
so we can really enjoy it.
Let's have some sounds.
Look at these.
Lots of great sounds to choose from.
Let's pick a couple that help us feel all lovely and relaxed.
A train, quietly clickety clacking along.
And a calming rain shower.
It's so lovely being inside when the rain is pouring outside
and hearing it go pitter patter on the windows.
I feel all cosy and safe.
How does it make you feel, I wonder?
Now for a smell.
These look interesting.
Flower smell.
Dog smell.
Ah, yes.
Let's smell the vanilla.
Vanilla is a spice and it helps us feel calm and positive.
Popcorn the dolphin loves vanilla ice cream.
Have you noticed there's one thought that can pop up over and over again?
Especially when we're trying something for the first time.
So, just imagine you are trying to do something.
Anything.
Balancing on one leg.
Reading a new big word.
Lying or sitting still.
Or solving a puzzle.
As you try, often quite soon after you start,
a very little but powerful thought pops into your mind.
I can't do this.
And we all get this when we try something for the first time.
And the best way to make the I can't thought go away is to think,
oh yes, I can.
The I can't thought is like a little naughty monster
who will suddenly jump in and make you feel all weak and annoyed
and maybe even frustrated with what you are doing.
All he ever says is, oh no, you can't.
When the I can't monster appears and all these hard feelings start,
it becomes even harder to do what you are doing.
More thoughts appear.
I'll never be able to do this.
This is a waste of time.
I'm bad at this.
And each of these thoughts make it harder to do what you are trying to do.
The I can't monster is always ready to jump out when you do something new,
something for the first time.
He's rubbing his hands together, just waiting for things to get difficult,
which they always are when you first try something.
So be ready for him.
The next time you are trying to do something,
see if you can spot the very second the I can't monster pops into your head.
When you spot it, smile to yourself,
because just by spotting it, you will be able to squash it.
And the thing that really squishes him is when you say back to him,
oh yes, I can.
Then he disappears into a puff of smoke.
The more you practice saying, oh yes, I can, the weaker he becomes,
and you get stronger and stronger.
This is a Zen Den master skill.
It means turning your I can't thought into a I will keep trying until I can thought.
That's called positive thinking.
And with that, you will succeed.
Learning to do anything just takes practice.
And practice means doing it over and over again.
I hope the next time you spot an I can't thought, you remember this,
that you can tell the I can't monster, oh yes, I can.
I know you can.
Keep up the practice to become a true Cosmic Kids Zen Den master.
Bye-bye.
Peace out.
Balloon.
Hello, Jamie here.
Welcome to Peace Out.
Time to get comfy.
Find a space and either lie down on your back, side or tummy,
or sit cross-legged or on a chair.
Take a moment now to decide which works best for you.
Now you've found your spot, have a wriggle and a fidget so your body feels happy.
And when you're done, say goodbye to those fidgets
and hello to that lovely, warm, calm feeling you get when you're relaxed
and your body comes to stillness.
Rest and breathe gently.
You can keep your eyes open for now if you like.
See if you can feel your breathing.
You might need to slow it down a little,
so you can feel what it's doing to your tummy,
making it lift as you breathe in
and lower as you breathe out.
Next time as you breathe out, let your eyes softly close.
Well done.
Now you can enjoy the adventure.
With your eyes closed, your mind can make the pictures for you.
You are outside in a garden,
and up in the sky you spot a red balloon floating.
You can see it has a little string dangling down.
It's floating down towards you.
You wonder where this balloon has come from
and why is it here for you.
Now it is right in front of you,
like it's waiting for you to take it.
You reach your hand forward
and take hold of the string.
Now you feel the balloon start to rise again up into the sky.
You don't let go,
and you feel it pulling you up too.
It lifts you right up onto your tiptoes.
And then your feet leave the ground
and you are floating too,
just like the balloon.
Where are we going you wonder?
You relax and let yourself be carried,
enjoying the cool air on your skin.
You see green fields down below
and the trees.
You are above the treetops,
looking down on them.
Look, just up ahead.
You see your favorite place in the whole world.
You decide what this place is.
See if you can imagine it now.
What does it look like?
The balloon takes you right to it
and you are lowered gently.
So you and the balloon are there now.
Look around at this place.
What can you see?
Can you hear any sounds?
Are there any people here?
Or animals?
Or is this a place you enjoy all by yourself?
Does it have a particular smell?
Or taste maybe?
As you stand here with your red balloon,
you soak up the goodness and joy from being here,
in your favorite place.
How much you love it.
Breathe into it.
As you do, you feel completely happy.
And with that happiness,
you are ready to return with your balloon.
It's time to come back.
See if you can notice any sounds around you now.
Notice your body,
where it touches the ground or the chair beneath you.
Enjoy a big stretch
and breathe in and out.
Gently open your eyes.
Take a second to just notice how you feel after that.
Different maybe to how you felt before you had your peace out.
It's been a real treat feeling all that happiness
from visiting your favorite place.
I hope you enjoyed it.
This is Jamie,
saying peace out.
