The Puerto Rican Woodpecker (Melanerpes portoricensis) is an endemic and common species in Puerto Rico. It measures 23-27 centimeters and weighs approximately 70 grams. The male has red throat and breast plumage, while the female is distinguished by the cream and brown tones of her throat. It inhabits coastal and mountain forests, parks, and gardens. It feeds on insects, larvae, ants, scorpions, eggs, lizards, coquís, and small wild fruits. Both build a hollow in the trunk of a dry tree or power pole, where she will lay up to six eggs. Both will incubate and feed the chicks. #nature #birds
