I'm Amy and this is Cooscoos' story for GeoBeats.
I call myself Puddle Ducks Rescue.
Somebody doesn't want to take their medicine.
I moved into a home that's right next to a park.
Cooscoos, come here.
Oh buddy.
Cooscoos and Beatrice, they're two domesticated geese.
Good morning.
They are a bonded pair.
They've been there for at least five years.
Someone brought them to that park and just left them there.
Hi Cooscoos.
Recently, Cooscoos got avian botulism.
They stopped being able to move.
Then usually they end up either having respiratory failure
or they drown if they're in the water when they get it.
So I had to grab them both and treat him to save his life.
Hi everybody.
I thought it would be quite hard on them to separate the two of them.
They're currently in my garage, my goose hospital.
Cooscoos was really out of it.
He was not doing too well.
To fix that, we tube feed him and then we give them pureed bird food.
Then we would alternate that with charcoal,
which is able to help that toxin pass through their body without being absorbed.
How are you?
These are incredibly intelligent birds.
They're up there with parrots.
They can absolutely recognize people.
Beatrice, even though she's very protective,
she still lets me do what I need to do to Cooscoos.
I think that's very remarkable.
Beatrice.
Hi.
I have a little baby camera in the garage to watch them
and she's always just full alert,
looking around to make sure that nothing could come get her mate
while he is not able to protect himself.
Once he's able to walk on his own,
we're going to drive them out to a friend's homestead in Colorado.
She has a lot of domesticated geese similar to them
and they're going to have a really good life out there.
How you doing?
Hi.
They're always together.
There's some boxes by the pond.
I think Beatrice and Cooscoos lasted for so long
because they had each other watching each other's backs.
Good job, Coos.
One would be eating.
The other one would be standing guard.
One would be sleeping.
The other one would be standing guard.
They had protocols.
Most ducks and geese that are abandoned don't last more than a few months
and the fact that they lasted at least five years is incredible.
Hi, Beatrice.
At one point, Cooscoos adopted two orphaned Canada goslings.
Hey, buddy.
Are you being watchful?
These goslings lost their parents
and Cooscoos literally took them under his wing
and he was always with them and showing them how to be a goose.
Geese get a bad rap.
They love their partner.
They love their family.
They love their babies.
Hi.
