Long after Kylian Mbappé lifted the 47,000 at the Parc des Princes from sorrow to jubilation,
the young French superstar repeated the same few lines that he has for the past calendar year
regarding his upcoming summer transfer decision. People talk about me and my future, it is normal,
but as a player of Paris Saint-Germain, Mbappé said, I will give everything I have, I can confirm
that my future had not been decided and this game with Real Madrid will not change anything.
While it will seem that Mbappé is playing things close to his chest by regurgitating the same
coach speak he has for months, there may be more truth to his words than appears on the surface.
The lie, it seems, may actually be the final sentence.
Which means the match against Real Madrid could change everything. And even if it doesn't change
his future, the question is, should it? PSG dominated, proceedings from the opening whistle
of Mbappé's last gasp, winner in the 94th minute, literally the final kick of the match.
Real Madrid, La Liga leader and the most decorated club in European history,
was forced to sit back and summon 10 men behind the ball like a team scrapping for a point against
an onslaught of oncoming pressure. The host, meanwhile, sent waves of attackers at the
bunkered Real Madrid defence, breaching the line on numerous occasions. Mbappé spun Dani Carvajal
again and again, winning the penalty that Lionel Messi wasted. Teenager Nuno Mendes was brilliant
on the left as well, linking with Mbappé with his own bright attacking flair. Ashraf Hakimi on the
other flank, 8th feral Mendy alive. Marco Verratti, who lost possession just 16 times in 123 touches,
proved himself a world-class midfield general. All in one, PSG amissed 57% possession,
which even seems to flatter Real Madrid. The hosts outpassed the visitors, 617 to 435,
at a 91% success rate. They outshot Madrid 21 to 3, putting 8 on the target and leaving Madrid
without a single shot on frame. It was a comprehensive attacking performance for the
ages, a sight to behold. In fact, the only player who disappointed was 34-year-old Lionel Messi,
who missed penalty was not his only moment of despondency, overshadowed by his young
gunsling teammate. It took a grand performance from Thibaut Courtois just to keep PSG out and
he nearly did so until the match took its final breath. One deep, reverent inhalation followed by
a collective explosive exhale. After the match, Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti called Kylian
Mbappé quote the best player in the world today. Whether he truly just meant literally today or
whether he meant to credit Mbappé as the best player in the current game may be lost in translation,
but either way, the sentiment rings true. Mbappé was the best player on the pitch for a team now
challenging for the title of the world's best. Nobody pins Real Madrid back like that.
So, with rumors swirling of Mbappé's summer switching to the Spanish giant, it begs the
question, after that performance, after that onefield statement, why would Mbappé leave
the better team for the poorer one? Even beyond this one result, PSG seems better set up for
long-term success. PSG's centre-back pairing is a duo of 26 and 27-year-olds, its electric
full-backs are 19 and 23, its award-winning goalkeeper is 22, and don't forget about Neymar,
one of the most electric players in the world when healthy. On the other side of the field,
the team whom Mbappé is rumoured to be joining has no such comparison. Real Madrid had to beg
36-year-old Luka Modric to return because there is nobody to replace him in midfield. Alongside
him, 32-year-old Kroos was the only Real Madrid outfield player who can be proud of his performance
in France. Karim Benzema is 34 and father time should come for him soon. Dani Carvajal, at 30,
was given a stark reminder of his years by player 7 and 10 years his junior. Only 24-years-old
Eder Militao gives promise of a bright future at the Bernabeu and even he failed to complete a
single tackle or win a single aerial duel in Tuesday's match. Mbappé may already be at the
best team in the world and certainly one that can offer comparable money to whatever contract Real
Madrid has in the oven for this summer. The old adage, if you can't beat them, join them,
lays hollow here. Instead, if you beat them, why join them? Have your say. Should Kylian Mbappé go
to Real Madrid this summer or stay at PSG? Let us know what you think in the comments section below.
