Osmosis explained in simple terms, yet it will help you gain a helpful understanding to be used later in Science. Osmosis is the diffusion of water through a semi-permeable membrane. A semi-permeable membrane allows certain items to pass through it and other items cannot. Osmosis is passive transport and works by solids, liquids, and gasses moving from high concentration to a low concentration.
Welcome to MooMooMath and Science and what is osmosis? If you can understand this picture
and why the egg gets larger and smaller when placed in different liquids, you will have a
good understanding of osmosis. Osmosis is the movement of water across a semi-permeable membrane
from an area of high concentration to an area of low water concentration. This process occurs in
order to equalize the concentration of water on both sides of the membrane. Imagine a room with
a special divider down the middle. The divider has a door that only certain items can fit through.
Now on one side of the room it's packed like super crowded. On the other side there's plenty
of space. So what happens? The people from the crowded side will start to move through the door
to get to the less crowded side. That's osmosis. In picture one you have an egg soaking in water
and vinegar which is dissolving the shell. In picture two the shell is dissolved and the water
on the outside of the egg has a higher concentration than on the inside of the egg. So the water flows
into the egg and it expands. In picture three the egg has been placed in corn syrup which has a very
low concentration of water and the egg begins to shrink because the water is flowing out of where
there is a high water concentration inside the egg into the corn syrup which has a low concentration
of water. Finally in picture four the place the egg is placed in distilled water which has a very
high concentration of water and the egg expands again because it flows from high concentration
outside the egg to the low concentration inside the egg causing the egg to expand. I hope that
was helpful. Thanks for watching and remember kindness multiplies kindness. Be kind to someone today.
