'We See How Low His Perception And IQ Are': Chuck Schumer Rips Into Trump Over Comments On AI
Sep 16, 2026
During a press briefing on Tuesday, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) spoke about President Donald Trump's comments on AI.

Now, Americans are demanding we act on A.I., which is looking more and more dangerous.
But Trump couldn't care less.
Trump says he has this issue covered.
Can you believe what he says?
This time he said the only control or guardrails that A.I. needs is a strong and smart, high-I.Q.
president.
Well, right off the bat, we don't have one of those, that's for sure.
Just on this issue alone, on A.I. alone, we see how low his perception and I.Q. are.
But it's also always what Trump does.
Americans scream out for help.
Trump dismisses them out of hand and says, leave it to me, and then does nothing.
Families are saying they're getting crushed at the gas pump, for instance, because of
Trump's war in Iran.
The president calls soaring fuel prices fake.
What planet is he on?
Americans say they can't afford basic expenses, and Trump calls affordability a hoax.
When does he ever buy anything?
And now on A.I., Americans are demanding a plan, and Trump calls it a hoax.
We know nothing, nothing about this administration's approach to A.I. safety.
And they dismantled what was in place to protect Americans.
That's going to go as a dark moment in history.
That's why I called on the administration to immediately hold a classified all-Senate
briefing about the risks that unchecked A.I. poses for our country.
Turn those lights back on.
Yes, the administration needs to follow through on this demand because we need to do something
on it.
We don't know what the administration's doing.
We don't know what the different agencies are doing.
And one of the things we all fear, Trump may be showing favoritism.
Some company he likes doesn't have any restrictions.
Another company he doesn't like, he puts on restrictions.
We need to make this all apparent to the Senate, because the only way we're going to get things
done on the issue of A.I. is bipartisanship.
And it's worth remembering that this has happened before.
I'm not just speculating.
Three years ago, I convened the Bipartisan Insight Forums to map the path forward on
A.I., developing a bipartisan roadmap and then seven bills.
We had bipartisan support on those bills.
Even Johnson said he might support them.
But then, Trump, Musk, and some of the Republican leadership just killed them.
And here we are now.
We could have had some protections.
If Trump refuses to act, Congress must.
