President Trump welcomed Team USA to the White House Thursday, honoring athletes from the
Winter Olympics and Paralympic Games held in Milan and Cortina, Italy.
During his remarks, the president discussed his administration's work on what he described
as protecting women's sports.
We've done a lot to help save women's sports, Trump told the crowd, drawing a subdued response
from some athletes in attendance.
He also referenced a judge's ruling, saying,
A bad judge declared sports unconstitutional.
Can you believe it?
The president said he's working to protect college athletics, and urged Congress to pass
legislation reshaping how sports are governed nationwide, pledging to sign such a bill into
law once it reaches his desk.
Following the event, several social media users criticized the president's comments
on various platforms, with some calling his remarks confusing or inaccurate, and openly
questioning his statements about the judge's ruling.
More than 120 athletes were invited to the reception, representing sports including figure
skating, curling, luge, speed skating, bobsled, snowboarding, and alpine skiing, from both
the Olympic and Paralympic teams.
White House press secretary Taylor Rodgers said ahead of the event that Trump would proudly
celebrate Team USA's achievements with a special reception at the People's House, adding that
the athletes' performances reflected American excellence and united the country in patriotic
pride.
The gold medal-winning U.S. women's hockey team did not attend Thursday's celebration,
citing prior academic and personal obligations, though Trump said the team would be honored
separately at a future date.
Two players, Abby Murphy and Joy Dunn, were present and received individual recognition
from the president, who also spoke at length about the men's hockey team, though those
athletes did not return to the White House.
In total, 300 U.S. athletes competed in this year's Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games.
The celebration had originally been planned for an outdoor patio area near the Rose Garden,
but was relocated indoors due to heavy rain Thursday evening.
