We're in this together. We need to get better.
We got to get ready as soon as possible because teams have been practicing for the last two weeks, last month.
So, it's up to us to concentrate. Every night we go out, every day we go out and give it our all.
Follow the team from the inside as they get ready to make America proud.
I'm very excited. This is one of the best groups ever.
One, two, three, USA!
It was clear from the beginning that the goal was not only to win, but to win the right way.
And that's what everybody in this country wants to see from us.
Two times.
You know, we'll definitely remember the game, but more than that, we'll just remember all the fun we had on the bus,
you know, in the hotel, like laughing and just having a good time.
And that's what makes the whole experience, you know, so much better.
It ain't about an individual. It ain't about us, man.
It ain't about us playing for our respective teams. It's about the United States of America, man.
Let's go do it for everybody in the United States of America. USA on three. One, two, three.
USA!
The one thing we tried to do in that world championship, and that was to stress over and over again,
we need to change the attitude and the perception people have of us as Americans and as athletes and as players.
Also joining the team was Kobe Bryant.
And though it would be his first time playing for the U.S., Kobe was a veteran of 11 NBA seasons and a three-time champion.
What's up, man?
Good to see you.
Welcome.
It means everything.
Been looking forward to this for a while.
And, you know, to be in this position now, to be able to represent our country, man, it's special. Special.
How are things back home with the Lakers?
Right now in this town, what we're trying to accomplish here, man, I just really want to keep the focus on this team.
And, you know, not dipping from that, not taking any attention away from what we're trying to accomplish here.
Let's go. Let's go. Go get them, man.
Let's go. Let's go.
Together. Together. One, two, three.
Together.
The very first play, the very first scrimmage, there was a loose ball, and here's Kobe Bryant diving on the floor.
That set the tone.
He showed a selflessness right away in telling us, look, I want to play defense.
I want to guard the best offensive player every time.
He's got a different mentality, and that's the mentality of being the best.
I think his presence alone makes us a much tougher team.
But Bryant would also show his teammates that his commitment to excellence extended beyond the court.
Who was there every morning?
Kobe Bryant.
Working up every morning. Hard.
Fourth quarter. Ten seconds.
Nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two, one.
Kobe's work ethic is out of this world.
You know, seeing him work, it just makes all the other players elevate their game to a higher level.
Go with it.
Can you talk about how the chemistry of this team has evolved from day one versus today?
Ah, man, it's awesome. I mean, guys is buying into the system.
I mean, guys working hard. We're just trying to get there.
One of the team's original objectives was to become a cohesive unit,
and it looked as if they had taken great strides toward that goal.
You have to give time. You have to make commitments.
You have to make sacrifices. You have to be together.
The three players who had devoted the most time to USA basketball over the past four years
were LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony, and Dwayne Wade.
They had tasted defeat in 2004, but had stuck with the team and with each other.
I mean, I'm happy that, you know, I got two friends like this, you know, to be around.
Especially stuff like this, you know, 35 days you're gone from your family,
but you're able to, you know, it's another family.
Exactly. It's like another part of your family, so it's like I never left home.
I made a commitment for three years, and, you know, it didn't say if you was healthy or not.
So, you know, a lot of these guys are great friends of mine.
I want to see USA basketball succeed just as much as anybody.
Me, LeBron, and, you know, Dwayne, you know, we became close friends,
and we always, from here on out, we're always going to be linked together.
You know what I'm saying? You know, because he's fun, he's fun, I'm fun,
so fun linked together because, you know, you feel me?
I'm the best looking one out of the crew.
So, you know, they're like my bodyguards, you know what I'm saying?
Hey, I would have rather you say I got a ring than just say what you just said.
Right now we feel like somebody stole our bike off our front porch.
That's how we feel, so we're going back to get it.
In order to be a gold medal team, a championship team,
you have to become a family first, you know,
and we know that it's a lot of laughing, a lot of joking,
but at the same time, when it's time to get down to business,
we know how to separate the laughing jokes
to now going out there and competing and being serious about things.
I know, I got hit with a back swing.
Nobody called the back swing out for me.
I don't know, what's that?
Okay, you want to switch that?
The back swing?
Okay, okay.
Okay.
All right, okay.
No, you're good, you're good, JK, you got five.
You by yourself, Stevie.
By yourself.
Don't come over the top.
Don't come, Mike, back straight.
Back straight, Mike.
Tonight's the first game, the first kind of step in that direction.
Are you kidding me?
If we play this the way we're supposed to play it,
we just changed the face of how our country plays basketball.
We're ready to go, so it's the beginning of a long journey.
Oh, and then the one change.
We're being loved again and appreciated,
and I think if we keep going the way we're going,
we'll be ready for the Olympics.
Here he is with Jason Kidd on the break.
He put that off the board.
LeBron James with a finish.
With an Olympic berth within their grasp,
the team made sure it didn't slip away.
You know, you all have your stories,
and you should think about that
because you are not just playing for Kobe Bryant or LeBron James.
You're playing for our country.
That's an amazing opportunity that is only afforded a very few people.
With all that's going on in the world,
our troops and so forth and so on,
this is our tennis.
This is our responsibility as Americans to go and compete
and to represent our nation the right way.
We've made this commitment to get to this point,
and we're going to make a lot of people proud
and rekindle that flame that Olympic basketball hasn't had in a while.
Hey, hey, hey.
Buddies.
What's up, man?
Hey, buddies.
That's right.
Are you going to put that pin down, dog?
What's up?
What's up, son?
What's up, man?
You all right?
Congratulations on a great year.
Thank you.
We've accomplished a lot, but there's a lot more to do,
and we need to finish the job.
Come August 24th, and they're passing out gold medals to someone.
We want to hear the stars tangle down there.
So let's go get it.
These beautiful boys got me looking like Iron Man.
You know what I'm saying?
Look at me, dog.
I ain't never looked this strong in my life.
What number do you normally wear?
What number did you wear two years ago?
Ten.
Here y'all go.
Who got ten on?
We're just playing basketball, but we're given names to drag or exchange.
Like you might have different names,
so we need to have the same vocabulary by the time the Olympics come.
We're very excited to finally get back on the court with each other.
You can break off any kind of action when you see something there.
We're given enough space to drive.
Today was to get reacquainted, to get the offense in, get the defense in.
So what you're doing is you're coming up, cut through to this side,
and there you get the screen down, and you have an open middle.
LeBron, Kobe, Dwayne, a lot of you guys are going to come off of that,
especially with Tayshaun, with Carmelo, and you get spread.
When you come off it, it gives you a chance to post.
Why don't we bring out today's mystery guest, everybody?
Here we go.
Kobe Bryant.
Today's like a day of getting a great feel for our country
and who we're representing.
Is this USA Basketball Journey?
No kidding. Thank you, Kobe.
USA.
Coach K, turn your head in your profile for a moment.
We're at CNN Morning News.
Me and J-Kid out here about to get us some good TV time.
All the kids that we own.
Thanks to both of you for being with us.
And we should say we really owe them a thanks.
You guys were on a flight that was delayed five hours from Las Vegas,
no sleep, and you made it with us anyway.
Thanks for being here.
I just want to say thank you for being here.
All our guys are excited to meet all of you
and to represent you this summer in the Olympics.
The MVP of the National Basketball Association, Mr. Kobe Bryant.
I'm a big kid person.
I got two young sons at home, and I know what they like.
I know what they enjoy.
So every time I get around a group of kids, it's like candy.
It can't be short for me.
So I'm happy that I was able to put smiles on those kids' faces.
This is going to be a great 30-something days.
I'm looking forward to this.
I'm excited. I've been so excited about this whole trip.
It's going to be a great trip.
On the road to the gold. Ain't that right?
The road to the gold, baby.
This was the first thing a lot of people saw coming to the country.
I mean, it was the first thing that they saw.
This is where a lot of dreams started for a lot of different people and families.
If you have a dream here in America,
I mean, you can literally go from the bottom to the top.
This is our dream here and now.
We're going to go back to this country.
So in a lot of ways, this is where our dreams begin.
After a busy few days in New York City,
the players had some time to relax and get ready for the challenge that lay ahead.
On good days like this, I just come out here and sit out here by myself
and just live in the moment and have fun.
This is something that you don't get to do every day.
Soon, they would all leave home and head for Las Vegas
to begin a month-long journey in search of gold in Beijing.
With all the positive energy in the room,
it's clear in the first team meeting
that the players have returned with a renewed sense of purpose.
When we go across these waters and we go play,
we got to be a no-excuse team.
What I mean is it's going to be us against the world.
We got to look at it that way.
We can't blame the refs. We can't blame the crowd.
We can't blame anything else on anybody.
We're in a position right now where we control our own destiny.
I know I'm guilty of this sometimes.
I sit at home and say,
if I had Dwight Howard on my team
or if I had Carlos Boozer on my team
or if I had Chris Paul as my point guard,
I would win the NBA championship.
So what's my excuse now?
I got all y'all on this team, so what's my excuse now?
Do we all have an excuse? We don't.
This is everything that we always dreamed of,
of having that guy next to you and winning something.
I'm excited, and I know you guys are,
so this is what I've always wanted,
of playing alongside Carmelo and Anthony,
of playing alongside of Jason and playing with Colby.
I don't have no excuse now.
None of them.
In 2005, a national team program was established,
requiring a three-year commitment from a group of NBA players,
and one of the boldest moves
was bringing in a college coach to lead them.
With the 2008 national team, Coach K's evolution continues.
Faced with a new challenge and a unique group of players,
he's learned the one thing that every great leader possesses,
the ability to adapt.
Any of the other guys here, coaching staff or anybody?
Defense. To me, defense and rebounding wins every time.
No matter where you play, you play here, you play at Mars,
you play anywhere you want.
If you can shut somebody down and rebound the basketball,
you're gonna win, no matter who you're playing against,
and I think that's the standard that we have to set.
Each member of Team USA
is among the most competitive players in the world.
Imagine what it's like when they're all in the same gym.
The level of basketball that I've been looking at
here the last couple days has been pretty remarkable.
We're really getting after each other,
really pushing and challenging each other.
Coming to watch the practice is just as good
as coming to watch the game, you know,
because we compete like there's no tomorrow.
Good defense.
We try to make each other better, we push each other,
and that's what a team does.
We see a guy, you know, one of our teammates
dive on the floor.
We want to dive on the floor the next time.
But maximum effort comes with a price,
and the physical play takes its toll.
No, no, sit down, sit down.
Don't sit down, man.
It ain't fun sitting over here.
LeBron's injury isn't serious,
and he uses his downtime to inject some levity into the gym.
Hey, C, about damn time.
I thought I was going to see a blue moon
before I seen you make a J.
A blue moon?
Number nine from Robbins, Illinois.
Relax.
Wait.
Wait, wait, wait.
Man, mellow yellow.
Hello.
Ladies, how you doing?
Here we go.
Some other teams that we're going to see when we get over there,
they're going to realize how close we are.
They don't expect that.
And for us, we're just having a ball off the court.
On the court, we're having a ball,
but we're also taking it very seriously
to prepare for the other team.
Practice in Las Vegas is over,
but the players carry over the same intensity
into their game against Canada.
Here's Kobe.
The team lands at dawn.
With the time difference,
it's as if they spent more than a full day in the air.
Kobe, did you take your pajamas off?
I know because of sleeping and all that,
this is a day where you be a great leader.
Red, red, red.
Good, that's the way to move it.
Yeah.
And what you're saying, that's a good command.
Stay up.
That's it.
We've never had a practice like this in 2006.
By yourself, by yourself, by yourself.
Switch, switch, switch.
And while LeBron James also has game despair,
he prefers to pump up the volume.
Yeah, see? Hey, see?
About time.
I thought I was going to see a blue moon
before I seen you make a chase.
Yeah, they miss me already, man.
They miss me already.
They ain't going to make it without me.
They ain't going to make it.
He doesn't stop talking.
Always yelling, barking.
He too small.
He too small down there.
Put him in a basket.
While LeBron is heard as a constant presence in the gym,
by yourself, screen right,
he's often joined by a respected voice of experience,
Kobe Bryant.
Coming up.
Help it, help it.
Get it, son.
If you spot up, if you see you got to spot up,
I'm going to dive.
All right.
By yourself.
By yourself, Mike.
Down, down, down, down.
Go flat.
You're going to have to come around and go this way.
Use all your momentum to go bam or bam.
Don't wait for that weak side.
Pin down.
Give you that whole room and do what you want to do.
Give you the whole middle.
Jump on top of the gate.
Kobe and LeBron have combined
to win the past three NBA scoring titles.
So there was some question as to how they would fit in
as members of this team.
Back to you.
10-1, Bryant.
Ready on the floor, boys.
Hey, Bryant.
Angle that double on a slant more.
So he's going to the back.
Just like, yeah.
But they've not only meshed with each other,
they've woven themselves into the fabric of the team,
which means doing much more
than just putting the ball in the basket.
Kobe starts on the defensive end.
I mean, today, just in practice today,
you know, he got out the rookie point guard.
Six straight possessions, he stripped him.
He's not about just scoring the highlights.
He's about the dirty work.
Kobe has been unselfish,
has been willing to do whatever it takes to win.
Hey, now.
Bryant being one of the biggest names on the team,
and to see that he gives himself just as much as anybody else,
it just funnels down to everybody.
Deny, deny, deny, deny, shot.
That's the word.
That's the word, huh?
That's the word.
Before signing up to play for their country,
superstars Kobe Bryant and LeBron James
had never been teammates.
But that doesn't mean the two most dominant players in the NBA
haven't admired each other's game from afar.
You're making each other better,
and it's the respect factor that we have for each other.
Last season in the NBA,
Bryant and James combined to average nearly 60 points.
But priorities are different on this ultra-talented national team.
The biggest difference for us is that when he's with Cleveland
and when I'm with the Lakers,
is sometimes you're going to have to muscle a shot off.
You have to go through two guys sometimes to create a play
or get a shot off.
With this team, you don't have to do that.
You got a shot, you got a play, you make it, you make it quick.
If not, you move it on.
Being two of the key guys on this team
and knowing that a lot of people are going to be looking at us
to lead this team.
Five, hey, no, regular one.
One, regular one.
I do a lot of talking to try to lead these guys with my voice a lot.
You know, my voice is very powerful, and he do it.
I mean, you guys know what he do on the court as far as example.
I don't have anything to say.
Tell him how you finished second to me in autograph signing,
all the way you started.
A hundred balls before me.
I did, I did.
He caught up with me.
He's got some work to do.
I do, I do.
You're used to doing that, though.
Dude's competitive, man.
That's all good, though.
That's shooting, dog.
Number 10 from Philadelphia slash Italy.
The marksman slash Mamba Kobe.
Right, right, right.
He's on the marksman.
He's hilarious.
I mean, nonstop, though.
You know what I mean?
Like, it don't stop.
I was talking to a dude yesterday from Croatia
who said if Dwight Howard comes down the lane,
I'm going to punch him in the mouth.
He just keeps going, man.
This guy got batteries in his back.
A dude from Yugoslavia said if Dwayne Wade thinks
he's going to come down the lane with that flashed up,
he's going to put him on the ground for real.
All day.
He just keeps going and keeps going and keeps going.
Oh, you like my look?
Hey, I should tuck my shirt out, shouldn't I?
Kobe Bryant look going.
Yeah.
All right.
What's up?
Let's go.
Come on.
All that means is get the hell out of the way.
I thought it was a plate, so I really figured it out.
I said, he going one-on-one.
That ain't no plate.
You've been tricking me for five years.
I figured it out now, Kobe.
You better change your signal.
I figured it out.
One shot.
I'm going to feel it down here.
Just having that outgoing type of environment,
it makes us come together a lot quicker.
Game time.
Game.
Game time.
Yay!
There's not much time before the games begin.
Bang, bang.
Game time.
I don't know what to tell y'all.
You almost had it, dog.
I'm still on U.S. time.
If that's the case, you should be up then.
It's 9-17 tonight.
I'm 15 hours behind, man.
Stinker.
Come on, now.
Three players in particular are hoping to find gold
at the end of a very long rainbow.
Good work, baby.
Good work.
Hey, D-Way, if he's setting the screen over y'all here,
slide over something.
No one on the roster has put in as many consecutive years
of national team service as LeBron James,
Dwayne Wade, and Carmelo Anthony.
Get back on post.
Our relationship has definitely grown.
More experiences that we've had in our life from 2006 to now.
We was young pups.
Showtime, showtime.
It's crazy being here in China.
It's so much fun.
You know, when we come here, we feel like rock stars.
We got to be out on the court by 25, bro.
Let's be dressed and ready after the meeting.
Let's get dressed.
In their first game on Chinese soil,
the players want to put on a show for the crowd.
Hit him up, LB, hit him up.
Here we go, LB.
Let's go, baby.
Put his top side.
Make him go here.
Once he gets here, top side, make him go here.
Let's go now.
Hey, let's break down the defense.
Ready, one, two, three.
Come on, come on.
You're never going to thread the needle with that pass against these Americans.
Kobe to LeBron.
Are you kidding me?
What a dunk by LeBron.
Okay, good job.
Good job.
Way to share the ball.
All right, good job.
Let's get in.
Come on.
Let's get in, Chris Paul.
Let's go.
Let's go, guys.
One, two, three.
USA.
All right.
Now that you're on the mainland,
is it hard not to look forward to Beijing and the real deal?
We've been looking forward to this for a while.
We're very excited about this opportunity.
And you hear it so many times.
It's kind of cheesy now and corny, but it's Road to Redemption.
I mean, that's what it is.
That's really what it is.
And we understand the journey that we're on.
And we want to savor every moment.
They thought you was dead on the plane.
No, I woke up like, I can't see.
I can't see.
Your shades still on.
We feel like we're a family first.
In order to be a gold medal team, a championship team,
you have to become a family first.
We have our fans cheering us on, pulling for us as a country.
United as one.
I can only imagine what that's going to feel like.
This is for our country.
Are you kidding me?
I mean, it's at a whole other level.
This is the start of the road to gold, baby.
Here we go.
USA on three.
One, two, three.
USA.
