The colorado avalanche put the nhl on notice after a statement win at home with a franchise record
eight goals against the la kings and nathan mckinnon of course finished it off with the
brawl we all saw all over twitter last night so the abs absolutely dominated last night there were
some aspects where they really weren't but for the most part i loved almost everything i saw from the
but first as always don't forget to subscribe 80 of you are currently not subscribed it's
completely free and you get daily updates on the colorado avalanche all right let's get right into
it so last night was the first game for rookie t.j hughes took the bucket list lap around the ice
for his first nhl game and he may not have shown up on the scorecard but i think he did not
disappoint i love the grit i saw from the kid he had some hits in there i think he had two hits
he had a couple near missed shots he had a lot of great opportunities just wasn't able
to capitalize i think t.j hughes may be here to stay depending on what happens once we get laurelle
and logan o'connor back in the lineup so let's take a gander at the scorecard from last night
let's make this a little bit bigger so everyone can see so leckin and it was the top guy on there
with a 3.02 brock nelson slightly behind him brock nelson with a 3.9 last night parker kelly jayden
schwartz both with a 2.44 nick law nathan mckinnon nazem cadre everybody was in the positives apart
from svetchkov hughes and noah juleson i'll say hughes was mostly in the negative just because
he happened to be on that top power play unit that had the two shorthanded goals against and
he was also on the ice for one of the even strength goals he was a minus three for the night i would
have realistically only given him minus one because none of these shorthanded goals were his fault
most of those were on mccarr or martin machis mccarr didn't look perfect in his first game back
but i think he's starting to get to form in the latter the seventh goal that was scored in that
up at the doorstep so pretty interesting game i'm not gonna lie to you mostly because we solved one
problem but we created another problem last season was the special teams was absolutely abysmal
this time around special teams was fantastic four for five on the power play i don't even remember
the last time that we scored four power play goals in one game but we did it and three of
them were by the second unit it wasn't even the top line that did a lot of things the top line
only scored in a five on three opportunity while the second unit scored all theirs in five on four
situations so last season the colorado avalanche scored two power plays last season where nathan
mckinnon was not on the ice and one came in a game where he did not play in in february the
already got three so they got three of them tonight all three this is the last time they
scored a three plus power play goals was october 28th against the devils and march 30th against
the flames it only happened twice last season and they have three and two periods tonight that was
in the middle of the game but the abs got three goals on the power play without mckinnon on the
ice already beating last year's total they have gotten almost the equivalent of 10 percent of
power play goals they got from last season in game one out of 84 this could be if trends keep
going this direction this could be one of the best power play units we've had in a long time
especially if we can keep up the incredible 80 percent that we currently have currently leading
the nhl right now although there has only been a few games in the league right now as you can see
in the scrolling bar at the bottom a lot of points from as players yesterday a lot of players with
multiple points last night here's all the players that had multi-point games we have brock nelson
with three points parker kelly with two nathan mckinnon with the two goals lacking in with two
goals schwartz with two assists nazem khadri with two assists tase with two assists and kale mccarr
with two assists i think it was a pretty well put together offensive game by the abs now we got to
flip to the other side the defense in that game i think is probably some of the weakest defense
i've seen from our team in quite a bit now if the offense can keep performing like they do
which doesn't always happen against every team but if the offense can keep performing then the
defense isn't going to need to be that stellar but they definitely need to lock it up a little
better especially if we're running a seven defenseman game i figured our defense would
be a little bit better considering we have 11 forwards instead of 12 so we are running with
seven defense when we had jouleson in there we only had nick waugh and parker kelly listed on
the fourth line due to logan o'connor and laurel being out but the offense was the one that
outperformed everything another thing that was a big issue let's look at this stat line last night
from mackenzie blackwood mackenzie blackwood stat line from last night was not great mackenzie
blackwood gave up four goals over 60 minutes two of them were shorthanded 27 saves on 31 shots
if he's really been fighting for a number one goaltender spot i don't know if exactly if i'm
too inspired by how he played last night those shorthanded goals apart from the two-on-one
opportunity the other one was kind of a high slot shot that wasn't screened at all and he just kind
went under his glove just kind of missed it he didn't even get a piece of it i think that's
something i've always noticed with blackwood is he's not always the greatest at catching
the puck with his glove he's great at centering himself and getting his body in front of it but
i don't know using the glove hasn't always been his specialty one thing that i thought was really
interesting about last night is the defense was really soft and there was a lot of breakaway
opportunities on blackwood now the craziest thing about that being is the kings didn't score
any of their goals on those breakaways all the goals came on two-on-one opportunities or screamed
shots i thought it was a pretty interesting method of goaltending there because he just i mean he
didn't give up the goals that he was supposed to but didn't save the ones that he was supposed to
it was just really backwards from what i saw i think this next game we may see wedgewood because
bednar has talked about how there is not a set goaltender number one on the team yet
they're going to be one a and one b until one emerges as the true starter last season that was
more scott wedgwood's category but blackwood is supposed to be in the best shape of his life so i
expect him to turn things up a little bit i was a little disappointed that we gave up four goals to
the la kings of all teams even though they didn't get a little better offensively they really didn't
hurt us at all in the playoffs last year another thing that was interesting was that the offense
performed so well for against a team that is supposed to be known for their lock for locking
up the middle of the ice and being good on defense and we put eight goals on for darcy kemper who had
was left in for the whole game i think darcy kemper should have been pulled after six maybe
the kings could have saved themselves a couple of goals their goals there but i don't think anything
was stopping the ass after mckinnon fired up the team with the fight with six minutes remaining in
the third period unfortunately mckinnon took himself out of that game was unable to get the
hat trick there all right let's look at some things that we have to talk about uh during the game so
t.j hughes did get a penalty but i love but from jesse montano he said i love that from t.j hughes
he didn't like the hit on the car and he went in and gave a couple shots to the king's defenseman
he got called for roughing which i thought was super weak but officials always call the
retaliation so those of you who didn't see kale mccarr was on a breakaway puck kind of rolled on
him and he got dumped into the boards by brent clark which also may have been what set off
nathan mckinnon later on in the game brent clark kind of cross-checked mccarr high and he slid into
the boards t.j hughes came by gave him a couple whacks and then before mccarr got up and skated
mccarr also gave him a punch so brent clark got a little bit of feistiness from everyone on the
abs lineup and brent clark answered the bell took the fight with mckinnon got dumped mckinnon
threw his helmet i think it was the most electric thing about the opening game of the season it was
a lot of fun hey if you were there for the live stream last night i basically got to be a boxing
commentator for 30 seconds that was a lot of fun but hey if you don't want to miss out on those
moments make sure that you tune in for future live streams we'll keep you updated on the channel
i believe i probably will be doing the next game as well since it is a home game against the rival
st louis blues but another thing that was pretty disparaging last night was the abs are winning
right now but their even strength play was not great i wasn't entirely happy by the even strength
play especially from the top lines bottom lines did pretty good i think nick waugh he had one of
the grittiest goals of the season already i mean jayden schwartz got dumped into the net the puck
was loose and nick waugh was able to flip it over the back of darcy kemper into the goal
kings kind of wanted a call for interference but their own guy pushed jayden schwartz into the net
not much they could do about that i think the even strength has definitely got to clean it up i think
that'll happen once we get 12 forwards and we move away from the seven defensemen noah juleson wasn't
bad but i didn't necessarily love his play last night so i'm really looking forward to getting
back logan o'connor or zachary roux all right let's do a few cleanups so here was a wrap-up
after the game from adrian hernandez he said blackwood was good but not great he got beat
from distance on two shorthanded goals against tj showed confidence offensively but was adrift at
times on d defense is always going to be the toughest thing to teach a rookie who is not a
teaching defense to a forward is always the thing that starts to come with experience
so i'm not too entirely worried about tj hughes i think it will develop more as he plays
four power play goals is great but two shorthanded goals against is not so much we led the nhl last
year and shorthanded goals given up i really don't want a repeat of that this next year
but pretty interesting this uh for the game last night the avs gave up two shorthanded
scored four so six goals were scored on five as our place but the penalty kill was great the
penalty kill did not give up a goal to the la kings so very interesting that the la kings are
more dominant when there's less people on the ice one more thing just to wrap up tj hughes was asked
why he wears number 13 and he has he loved watching pavel datsuk and mike camilleri datsuk is datsuk
magic hand self-explanatory and camilleri i liked watching him on the habs great goal scorer
and yes he has always worn number 13 so those of you who are a little heartbroken from the fact
that he is wearing nichushkin's old number i know everyone misses nichushkin but that's why he wears
13 it's not like we're going to retire nichushkin's number we didn't really get much with him we did
get a stanley cut but we did have a lot of other issues with him not like he was going to stick
very long one more thing let's look at the box score box score from the game last night so here
is the box score from last night a lot of abs on the score sheet there was only five players at the
bottom that did not register a point and that was malinsky hughes spechkov julesen and kulak malinsky
didn't play as much as i was kind of hoped him to but i think he'll get more in once we move away
move back to 6 and 12 but points for everybody but those five i think it was an impressive night
for the abs and of course yet again most goals by the abs in a home opener in their franchise history
i always love it when we break records i think it's fantastic for the team and i think it's
so exciting that we get to go into this year already having an electric start let's keep
it going and let's stay undefeated as long as possible thank you very much for watching i
look forward to the next game with y'all we'll keep you updated on future videos with avalanche
digest yet again don't forget to subscribe thank you very much we'll see you in the next one
