The 500-year-old mystery of Christopher Columbus - BBC REEL
We are here in a church,
located next to the Castanheira settlement.
It was a settlement that belonged to D. Álvaro de Ateíde.
It is in this pantheon that we have the whole Ateíde family of the 15th century.
It can be said that in this tomb
may be the final answer
to this mystery of 500 years, which is the origin of Christopher Columbus.
If we analyze the documents written by Christopher Columbus,
it is very difficult to accept,
because in fact the incompatibilities are countless.
If we analyze the various documents in which Columbus refers to his age
and the times in which he was sailing,
this leads us to a year of birth of about 1442-43.
Columbus says in several writings that all his life he went to the sea.
When he receives the coat of arms given by the Catholic kings,
it is written explicitly that he could join that coat of arms
with the weapons he already had from his family,
which also shows that he was undoubtedly a nobleman.
And besides that, he married a Portuguese noblewoman,
Filipe Amoniste.
The son Hernando Colombo, who wrote the biography of Almirante,
says that his father, Christopher Columbus,
arrives in Portugal in the sequence of a naval battle
that took place in 1476.
However, if we analyze the writings of Almirante,
he clearly says that since 1471,
that is, at least five years before,
he was already trying to convince John II,
who was actually still the prince of João.
John II refused to sponsor his trip to the Indies,
as was said at the time,
and then he went to offer his services to Castile.
All of Columbus' documents are written in Castilian,
but with many words and formations of the phrases
of Portuguese origin,
which was even natural,
because at the time the Portuguese court,
as it had several Spanish queens,
was a court that was bilingual
from the beginning of the 20th century,
which draws the attention of the connections
of Christopher Columbus to Portugal.
This fact allows us to put two hypotheses.
Either the documents disappeared,
which may have happened,
or, while he was in Portugal,
he used another name.
Now, if we look in the Portuguese documents,
then, yes, there are references to a Pedro Colom,
who was a courier.
Hernando Colom, in his father's biography,
implies that his father adopted the name Colom,
in homage to a courier.
In reality, there are 60 promenades of connection
between Pedro Ataíde and Christopher Columbus.
The Ataíde family is involved in the years 84-85,
in a conspiracy against King John II.
Several Ataíde families flee to Castile,
and, curiously, Columbus leaves for Castile
precisely at that time, in 85,
for something he did against the king.
He made a contract with the kings of Castile,
signed by Christopher Columbus,
and that contract was his fortune all his life.
All the facts I told raise many suspicions
about this connection between Pedro Ataíde
and Christopher Columbus.
But, to convince historians,
the only hypothesis will be to have a DNA test.
Of all the potential candidates,
and there are many candidates,
the one with the clearest connections
to Christopher Columbus is, without a doubt,
Pedro Ataíde.
