Did you know that establishing fixed plots for upland rice can significantly boost your
yield and sustainability?
Let's find out how.
Establishing fixed plots for upland rice is a rewarding venture.
In this video, I will walk you through the steps of establishing fixed plots for your
upland rice farming.
But before touching the steps, let's take a quick look on what is upland rice.
Upland rice, also known as dry rice, is rice grown in dry land environment, meaning it's
cultivated in rain-fed or less intensely irrigated fields, rather than flooded rice
paddies.
Many farmers struggle with inconsistent yields and poor land management, which can be really
frustrating.
This is often due to a lack of planning and inadequate land preparation.
To address these challenges, it's essential to understand the key principles of upland
rice farming and how to apply them in practice.
By following the right techniques and strategies, farmers can improve their yields, reduce waste,
and create a more sustainable farming practice.
Now let's discuss the key steps in establishing fixed plots for upland rice, including site
selection, land preparation, measuring plot size, and calculating seed requirement techniques.
Site selection is critical, as it determines the overall quality of the soil and the amount
of sunlight the crops will receive.
When establishing fixed plots for your upland rice, consider selecting sites that receive
more sunlight and have good fertile soil.
Soil preparation is essential, as it involves removing weeds and tilling the soil to create
a suitable environment for the crops.
After selecting the site for your rice garden, clear the bush by slash and burn.
All vegetation which is not burnt out during clearing and burning should be removed and
stored away in a special place under the trees to become compost pile for returning
nutrients to your rice field later on the next crop rotation.
Measure the plot to determine the amount of seeds required.
A family unit standard rice plot for crop rotation and family labor will require a plot
size of 1,000 square meters.
This area can also be divided into subplots.
Many rice farmers sometimes left with a lot of unplanted seedlings in a nursery or sometimes
run out of seedlings during planting time.
This is due to farmers not knowing how to calculate the amount of seeds required for
planting.
A plot size of 1,000 square meters requires 3 kilograms of rice seeds.
Establishing fixed plots can lead to better yields, healthier crops, and a more sustainable
farming practice.
By following the right techniques and strategies, farmers can improve their farming practice
and create a more profitable business.
