Starting A Fire With Knife Ferro Rod Birch Bark In Damp Conditions Bushcraft Survival Skills
Hi Wild Ones! It's a lovely soggy day in England so today I'm going to have a go at making a fire
using just my neck knife and ferro rod and some lovely birch bark. The birch tree is really easily
identifiable even this time of year with no leaves just because of the lovely white silvery bark.
Also you'll see the bark quite often peeling off like this like paper. Birch bark is really great
for fire lighting because it's full of natural oils that make it really flammable. I'm taking
most of my birch bark from this fallen tree here. It comes off nice and easy. I'm also collecting
lots of these leaves off this tree here. They're not perfectly dry but they're drier than what's
going to be on the ground at the moment so hopefully when the birch bark takes the spark
and we've got a little flame we'll put some of these on and hopefully the fire will get going.
I'm also collecting a few bits of dead grass. Again it's a bit damp so I don't know if it'll
work but ferns are really great for this, dried ferns in the autumn, early winter. Next I'm
collecting some wood to go on and at the bottom of the birch tree you'll usually find these little
thin branches. These are great to start with so I'm collecting lots of those. We've got
birch bark to start it with, some semi-dry leaves, some semi-dry grass,
some tiny little thin sticks, some slightly bigger sticks and some slightly bigger sticks again.
Now I'm just doing a fire in my bush box today. If you're making a bigger fire you're going to
need bigger sticks. I just want to make a cup of coffee so that's hopefully all I'll need for today.
For this I'm using my Mora Eldris neck knife and this one actually came with its own little
ferro rod. I'm going to start the fire on this little bit of bark and then hopefully just quickly
lift it into there. That's going to be the difficult bit, getting it from here to there.
We'll be fine. Right, first thing you want to do is you want to get your bark and you want to make
scrapings. This is going to take a spark a lot easier if you make the smallest bits possible.
Worry about wrecking my jacket now. We're going to make scrapings with the knife just like that,
tiny little bits. So now we want to use our ferro rod and our knife and try to get a spark
into our little pile of wood shavings. Oh no, it's gone out! I just suffocated it.
I need these sticks drier than they are. If I can get a cup of coffee I will be well happy,
in fact I'll be proper excited. Keep going baby! Hopefully it's got enough heat going in it now
like it's drying out the sticks as they go in. I'm getting low on leaves and stuff now so
don't you dare go out little fire. Come on, come on, come on. There's a good fire.
Oh my god, I can't believe it. My water's boiling. Boiling water.
I'm making a coffee. I'm so proud right now. Got there in the end. I am gonna enjoy this coffee.
That's it from me guys, thank you so much for watching and I will see you again soon. Bye!
