This tomato originates from Romania and is a rename being it never had a name to begin with. Some consider it a dwarf and some consider it a micro dwarf. This is the story behind it: “There will be no chance to know the original name, perhaps it has had none. A friend of a friend of a friend of a friend – I don't know him and I don't know how he got to know of my passion – had discovered 4 tasty tomatoes somewhere in a small village in Romania and had saved a few seeds and I got them on a piece of paper in 2013 with very vague descriptions, started them first last year. Only one survived late blight, not a single ripe fruit from the others. I only knew that this tomato had been grown in a window box and was yellow, so I put ... The species originated in Central and South America. The Nahuatl (Aztec language) word tomatl gave rise to the Spanish word "tomate", from which the English word tomato originates.
Welcome back everybody. We're going to do a tomato review on this tomato right here. I'm going to back you out a little bit
I'm going to do a tomato review on this tomato and it's called surge's love don't know much about it
But whatever information I do pull up from the internet, I will put in the description below as well as the website
So here we go. Let's take a better look at this
Tomato, I didn't do too good with it. It did die early this year and we are going to
Be growing this next year. One of the problems
Was is that I didn't notice was generally
Not a very tall plant. I think it's a dwarf variety
And so it just didn't do good. I didn't place it in the right part of my garden for such a small tomato
In fact next year, we're going to be growing all the dwarf tomatoes and micro dwarf tomatoes
And short tomato plants some tomato plants, even though they're not
Called a dwarf. They're generally just small plants. They don't get too much bigger than two feet
They're regular plants, but they don't get big but they're not considered a dwarf. I don't know that
There's some varieties like that
So all of those types of varieties now that I know what they are and how they grow and everything
they'll be grown separately from the other tomatoes in my garden, which are monsters to be honest with you, but
Anyway, this is it and we're not going to weigh it because you could basically see it's about the size of a current tomato
Or very small cherry tomato, so it's going to weigh very little
i'm not sure if
They get any bigger than this again, I don't have um,
any tomatoes
Left on there for me the plant's basically dead. So I don't know and plus when I did plant the seeds to this
I planted I don't know maybe four or five, uh seeds from the seed package that I got it from
And there were a couple plants that were not this variety
That came up with it and they ended up dominating that that spot and these died
But the one that wasn't this variety lived and is putting out fruit, but it's not this one. So
Uh, we will definitely concentrate on growing this next year. So
Anyway, uh, let's cut it in half and do a bricks on it. See what the brick says
Cut this one, I guess
I'll show you the inside too
Oh, this one's not ripe at all any good
That's what the inside looks like anyway
All right, so it's just a basic by chamber that's that I don't even know if I want to eat that
That's not even right
We'll cut this one. I know this one's right. It's been around a while
There we go
Yeah, it's nice and juicy
How's that one?
all right, so
let's uh do a bricks and
See what it says
Oh, it's almost seven. It's like six and three quarters on the bricks, which is
It's pretty high. That's a good sign
so
Without any further ado. Let's uh, let's give that a go
Okay, start off with the sweetness. It generally wasn't very high
And it was a little bit lower than than um center line on the sweetness, but it wasn't bad
um
If I were to put a number on the sweetness, I'd probably say
Uh say, you know from zero to fifty i'd probably say about maybe 22 on the sweetness again
It wasn't very high in the sweetness
So 22 would probably be fair number to give that on the sweetness now. The tangy part was strange
there was a type of
I don't i've never had tomatoes like this before but this tomato almost had like a salty type of a flavor to it
Believe it or not. It tasted a little bit like it was salty
So i'm not sure how to
rate that part of it, but the tangy part it was it was the salty part was like connected with the uh,
The tangy part of it, which was the more dominant than than the sweet obviously
So if I was to give the tangy a number was much higher than that
I'm going to say the tangy was probably about a 33 to 35
So it was kind of on the tangy side
So it had a salty flavor though like to it it didn't taste bad don't get me wrong it didn't taste bad
It was just strange
You you don't need salt for this tomato. This tomato has like his own salt or something in there
but
The tomato flavor as far as the prominence of it. It was very strong
It that because of that salty flavor that the whole effect of that
tomato flavor was was incorporated to this
Salty-ish type of an effect which was very nice. It left a very interesting
aftertaste in my mouth
Very interesting. I really strange. I definitely want to explore this tomato a little more
So it where would I place that from zero to ten with ten being the highest?
How dominant was that flavor? I'm going to put that at about a seven and a half. It was pretty dominant
Because of the salty flavor that it had it really delivered the whole package of that tomato
odd tomato combination flavor
So we're going to go about seven and a half on that tomato flavor. It's definitely around that number
It was a lot higher than I normally would rate, uh tomato flavors
And again when we're talking about the the tomato flavor, we're talking about how concentrated how strong was that flavor in the whole?
Flavor profile of that tomato taste test how prominent was that flavor? That's what we're talking about here
How concentrated was that flavor? We're not talking about how good it was talking about how characteristic how strong was that characteristic?
Of that tomato flavor with the uh, you know with the with the experience the the review
Moisture was generally pretty low. That's again. These some of these tomatoes been sitting out for a while
In fact that one over there is not even ripe yet. Not totally right, but
Uh, how would I how would I rate the moisture on it? Um
Wasn't totally moist. Uh
I'd probably go about a three on the moisture. It was relatively pretty low guys
It wasn't really juicy, but it was it was wet but not really juicy
It was kind of on the dry side again
The plant died early could just be because they were they ripened green on a dead plant
Basically, I mean they ripen to a uh color like that. Um, as far as tarty sour
I don't know that salty flavor or tartiness was kind of like incorporated to all together. This is very odd for me
Um, the tarty or sour flavor was kind of incorporated with the tanginess
Using the um
uh saltiness as like a
Binder of some way it just it connected the flavors somehow
But there was a little bit of a tartiness in there very slightly. I'd probably go with a one on the tartiness
uh only because I felt it on the very bottoms of my jaw in the very back of your
Your jaw the very last area where your wisdom tooth are right behind there
I get an effect when I eat something tangy. I can really feel like a
uh
I don't know what I don't know how to describe the feeling it's just when I eat something
Sour and my mouth is starting to pucker that part of my jaw really gets affected
So that's why I separated that and I included that separately sometimes
Uh, you can taste that you can get that effect a lot
Sometimes you don't at all and I don't get that effect with the tangy or acidity flavor
Which i'm probably gonna put tangy put acidy or tangy flavor
I'm probably gonna update that title to that because I don't want to confuse people between tangy and tarty
When I when i'm talking about tarty or sour
I'm referring to that effect you get in the back of your jaw
I get that once in a while with tomatoes not strong, but I a little bit I can pick it up because I do so many
Tomatoes, I eat so many tomato varieties. I've trained my
Myself to be able to to look for that effect. I pay attention very deeply to these very slight nuances
So again, it was something there i'll probably just put a one on it for now
But we're going to re-review this next year again
And uh this way we'll grow it out and we'll really see what this thing can really do
Uh, there were no undertones on it other than that salty flavor. I i'm not sure
Uh where to put something like that. I guess you could say it was a slight undertone to it
the flavor had like a uh
A richness to it. It was like a richy
Uh salty flavor I can't even describe that there was something there maybe i'll consider it as part of that
Probably put that salt flavor under the undertones and say consider that probably about a two and a half
Something like that for the undertone or salt, whatever you want to call it
Real strange effect on that. So yeah, there was something going on there texture was about average. I'm not gonna
you know again, we didn't get too many tomatoes and
Texture was about average on that. We'll probably just call out a five production was obviously really low because the plant died early
so I can't really uh judge the production, but
I I I this year wasn't very good. So I can't i'm not going to rate it based on a production
Unfortunately, even the texture would be kind of wrong because it's just a few tomatoes I got
So how would I rate it overall i'm going to rate this actually?
From number one being the highest and number ten being the lowest
I probably would rate this thing at least a four for this year and i'll probably bring that number up next year
Once I grow it out more and I get more tomatoes
That salty flavor and that the the odd
Flavor of that tomato flavor itself. It did have an odd kind of a flavor
I don't know what to call that tomato flavor or undertones. It's a
It was a very strange effect
We'll have to grow this out next year to really give you a true reading of that rating
It'd be unfair if I say oh, it's a number eight, you know, or it's a number four
I don't know what how to rate it yet
So when I grow it next year, we get a bunch more tomatoes. We'll really start to explore this flavor
I can tell you right now the flavor that I did pick up from this is very very strange
you're very very oddball and and uh
It's unusual. It's not going to be like any of the other tomatoes that i'm growing
This thing was in a world of its own when it came to the taste of it
So where would I rate it? I probably for now i'm just going to rate it four
And I think i'm going to bring that number up next year because it's such a unique flavor
We'll we'll uh, we'll definitely explore that a little better
But really that's it guys. That's that's my tomato review for the surges love tomato
um
