Sheridan is my baby sister, someone I grew up with, someone I helped raise, and someone I beat up on
occasion. She has grown into someone I consider a confidant and one of my very best friends.
Brandon is a kind and upstanding person, someone who is worthy of marrying my little sister,
which is the highest praise I am capable of giving. Ideally, home is where your comfort is,
which is the first pillar of any healthy relationship. For Sheridan, it's where you
For Brandon, it's where you
I believe creating that feeling of comfort is paramount to a strong relationship,
because home is where you find shelter from life's chaos. It's the place you return to
again and again to replenish your stores. We all know we are called by God to forgive.
Forgiveness is the ultimate manifestation of God's love. When you forgive, you are seeing
the other person as more than their worst moments and greater than the sum of their parts. And you
two are pretty great. I have seen you two love each other through good times and not-so-good times,
and I have seen you two pick each other up when life knocked one over. Brandon, I saw this when
you moved to Michigan to go to school with Sheridan. Sheridan, I saw this when you encouraged
even if that meant moving again. Respect is one of those things that everybody wants,
but is pretty rare. Respect for your partner means putting in the effort needed to sustain
the relationship even when that work is out of sight. Ideally, you will learn to anticipate
the needs of your partner, but your job is also to communicate when you are tired, sick, or stressed
so your partner knows that they need to support you and pick up whatever is remaining of your 50.
Brandon, you don't have to join Sheridan on her door-to-door sales pitches,
but I have seen you listen attentively as she has disassembled her latest factory.
Sheridan, you don't have to caddy for Brandon every time he plays disc golf,
but I have seen you check your phone constantly when he has a competition.
You both have shown each other respect and love when you responded to what the other cared about,
when you have shown interest in their investments, and when you have gotten excited when they did.
While your home may be on earth and not in heaven yet, keeping God as your foundation,
your family and friends over your heads, and maintaining pillars of comfort,
forgiveness, and respect will make it resistant to the storms that will come.
You are both so loved by everyone here today.
We are all so excited to visit the beautiful home you are creating together.
I was this at least slightly arrogant, procrastinating student who rode into class
on a 22-inch blue penny board. Sheridan was just trying to adapt to the Texas heat.
I would constantly tap on my desk during tests, and she would constantly glare at me from two
seats over. Somehow, though, she said yes when I asked her to coffee,
and we have been committing our lives to each other ever since.
Sheridan, you defend people in your life to the tooth and nail. You love them actively,
and you love them often, and you are the most honest and trustworthy person I have ever known.
You have taught me to take my love and my beliefs from textbook to real life,
and you have allowed me the opportunity to see more joy in this life than I thought possible.
I vow to always look for ways we can sharpen each other in our relationship.
I will always, always, always tell you to stop using our oven to dry dirt for your plants.
I will respect you as my equal counterpart in this marriage.
I vow to never stop being completely goofy with you,
and singing to the edge of our breath out of pure fun.
Lastly, I will never stop seeing you as someone I can learn from.
You have changed my life in so many perfect ways, and I am literally,
I love you.
Two weeks after we started dating, I went home and told my dad that I had met a boy,
and he was the best person I have ever met.
And you have spent the past five years proving me right.
I love the way you think, I love your wisdom, and your incredibly dumb ideas.
I love all of our conversations, from discussing our future
to hotly debating the merits of putting cream in coffee.
I love hearing your thoughts on the world,
and the ratio of magnesium to calcium that should go in coffee water.
Most of all, I love being your partner.
You have made me more patient, kinder, and more calm.
I promise to always treat you with kindness and respect.
I promise to support all of your hobbies, unless it's CrossFit.
I promise to see disagreements as opportunities to grow,
and never stop becoming a better partner for you.
I love you.
