This tutorial demonstrates how to sew crochet granny squares together to create a small bag. The instructor explains the process of joining squares into strips, assembling the bag's body, and securing the edges to ensure a clean, professional finish.
Hello, welcome back. I'm Crafty Patty and if you've been watching you've seen me do a little tiny bit of a
crochet granny square series. The first one we showed you how to make the granny square.
The second video I showed you how to do a blocking and why so watch those videos and now
today the third video I'm going to show you how we sew them all together.
I will leave the links in the description box below
to all the videos so you don't have to look for them. All right, let's start sewing these together.
So we'll take these off and you can see how beautifully they're formed. It'll make it so much easier to sew these together now.
Decide the layout you want for your granny squares. Now I'm going to be making just a little tiny bag.
So this is going to be the front of the back and these four squares will be the front of the back.
So just a little tiny bag just as a starter project.
So we're going to start here
with sewing these two squares together and we're going to sew up all of this
and then we're going to come through and we're going to sew this way
and I'm going to flip it together and then we'll sew up our sides.
I'm going to go up a size from a 4 to a 5 millimeter to do the sewing of the granny squares together.
And I'm choosing a yarn color that I've already got in all of my squares. So I'm using this beige
and we'll start with a slipknot just a matter of putting your yarn over top of the other one,
holding on here.
This yarn comes up through that hole.
Let's grab it with our crochet hook,
hold down on our two ends, and you have made your slipknot. On this particular granny square
I have got two chains on my corners.
So I'll be using the one chain to go in this direction and the other chain to go in this direction.
And the same for the other side.
This is my second chain and let's go into the
back of that stitch right there.
Now I'm going to hold down because it's on my slipknot right here because it'll tend to twirl a little bit on that first stitch.
So let's just wrap around for tension.
We're going to wrap around our hook to grab the yarn
and then we're pulling through
this side, the other side, as well as the slipknot. That's our first one.
Let's go down and find our second one. This is going to stay
coming up and it's going to be
underneath.
So here's our next one.
We're going down.
On this side, we're going down into the back of the stitch
and wrapping around,
pulling through all
three.
This is always going to be underneath.
I'm just going to drop it for now just so it's easier for me to demonstrate.
Again, here's our next one.
Down.
Here's our next one on this side.
And down into the back of the stitch.
Wrapping around and
through all three.
I'll do a couple more.
Down into the back, down into the back,
and my
yarn I'm working with is in the back.
Wrapping around. We've got three stitches here. Wrapping around,
pulling through all
three.
You might also find it easier to just pick them up right off the table and then you can go a little bit faster.
Just going into this back stitch here,
but making sure that you bring your hook over top of your working yarn and then back through this one.
So then you can grab that yarn to pull through all three.
Here's another one. Back to this one. I'm coming over top
and then down.
Just have to remember to keep going down.
One more time for you.
Down,
over top of the working yarn, down,
and pull through all three.
And that's what it looks like
sewing them together.
And your back side,
quite tiny as well. You can hardly even see that.
So that's pretty on the back side as well. Not that you'll ever see that because I'll have it against the lining.
So now I'm going to bring in my next two squares,
finding
my corner one. Here's my corner. That's my back stitch right there.
Grab that one.
And on to this one, finding my two corners again, and it's this one here, into the back,
there.
Okay, so once I've got them
hooked in there, I'm just going to pull this up.
And I just find it easier that way.
And let's get that all joined together, coming through all of those three.
Do a little bit of a cinch up
to make sure we don't have a big gap in the middle there.
And then on to our next one. Again, I like to hold it up.
You work on the way that works best for you. Into the back,
over top of my working yarn, and there's the back,
and then pull through all three.
Again, working up exactly in the same manner,
making sure that you just grab your next stitch, which is this one here,
over top, in the back,
through all three.
Okay, and there's another two added.
Keep going. Bring in the next two again.
Finding those corners,
and into the back,
and let's find the corner. This one,
it's this one here, into the back,
and I'm going to pick them up again
so I've got more control.
And let's wrap around, pull through all three.
Next one, so it's this one,
and it's
this one.
There we go.
And we're
off to the races again. All right, so I'm going to finish up this one
and the same with the next last two.
And I've done my last stitch up here.
So I'm just going to pull that through my last stitch, cut off the yarn,
and I'm just going to leave that for now, and I'm going to
sew that in later after we're finished.
Starting at the bottom here,
same thing,
making another slip knot,
and we're starting again just like we did this way, and we're going this way.
So I'm going to just turn it this way a little bit just so you can see,
and I'm looking for, again,
my corners.
There's my two on the end, so off to the back stitch there,
and
into the corner here for this one.
Let's make sure our yarn is coming up to the front there,
got our slip knot down here,
and let's do our first one,
holding on to our slip knot so we don't lose it,
and pulling through all three,
including the slip knot.
Same thing,
always, I am always starting on the left. If you're right-handed, you might be starting on the right.
So down through the next one,
use our next one here,
and making sure we're over top of our working yarn, down through the next one here,
and pulling through all three.
So I'm going to pick this up again because it's easier for me.
Again,
through the back,
on top,
and down,
top
to bottom, through all three. Do that one more time,
through the back of the stitch,
over that working yarn,
down through the back of the stitch,
and pull through all three.
And I'll meet you up here at our corner.
I'm just getting close to the intersection here. I'll do this one.
I'm going to come into this one here,
around, of course, and I want to come in here. I'm going to grab this one here, too.
That one right there.
And we'll wrap around
all these three.
It's kind of creating a stitch that's not really there, but this is going to help to
bring this together a little tiny bit better.
And
I'm going to do the same thing here.
Even though this is not a stitch, I'm going to make it a stitch. So I'm going to go down
with this one, over as always,
and down through this one.
And let's come through those three.
Oops.
I'm going to bring those together.
And then now let's come into that.
Now let's come down into that next real stitch
and see if that's helped a little bit. So again,
down, over,
down into this one,
and pull through these ones.
I'm just going to do a couple more so we can see
how I did there.
See if that was a good idea or not. It might not have been, but we will see.
Okay, I think we've gone far enough.
Okay, let's see what that looks like.
So that
makes it look so my
stitches are fairly even and it brought it together not too badly.
These corners are a bit better than these two, but I'm okay with that.
I always say if you're doing handicrafts, if you've got it perfect like a machine, then why bother?
I'm quite happy with that. That's just fine. So I'm going to finish up this row and I'll see you when we get to the end.
And again, pull your yarn through, cut it off.
And then do the same for this one and this one.
We now have our squares all sewed together
this way and this way. Now what we're going to do is just fold it in the middle
and we're doing wrong sides together. This is our right side.
And now we're going to sew up our
two sides.
And let's start with another slip knot as always.
I find if I come into the next stitch, there seems to be like a little bit of a hole there.
So what I'm going to do is I'm going to come into the same stitch
as we did on the last one.
So we're going to come into there
and we're going to come into there and we're going to start there.
So let's pull through all three
including your slip knot.
And again as always working our knot here and going over top. So finding your next stitch
and which is right there
over top and into the next one which is right here
in through all three.
Same as before.
Work your way all the way up.
Same thing as the intersection as we did before.
All exactly the same.
Okay, so I'm just going to carry on
and
we'll meet you at the intersection here.
And I'm going to do the same thing here where it's gaping a little bit.
I'm going to use that as a stitch even though it is not a stitch.
And we'll come down
through that one and come down through that one.
And that just helps to bring it together a little better.
And we'll do the same thing on this side where we see a little bit of the pulling.
Just there and there.
So down through there
and down through here.
And we'll pull through those.
And that just helps to pull it together a bit better.
Okay, and carry on
with your other stitches.
And we'll just
cut it off at the end there as always. So see you up here.
And my last stitch was my two corners.
And again
cutting it off.
Do the same thing for your other side.
And now to make our ends a little bit tighter here. You can see where these are the
slip knots on the ends of our rows.
So we're just going to tie these together.
So I'm just going to sneak this one.
So go underneath this one.
And then I'm going to tie these two together just with a basic knot.
Basic knot right over left
and left over right.
And then I'll slip these both to the inside of the bag.
And then I will sew those in.
And I've done the rest of the cleanup.
Another one on the bottom of the bag. I'll do the same thing.
Again going underneath this one.
And then just tying these together.
Move the square knot right over left
and left over right.
And again popping these to the inside of the bag.
And that has finished that off better.
Also same thing on the corners.
And again those will get popped into the
inside of the bag.
So I've finished off all my sides.
They're probably just easier to
turn it inside out. And then you can
sew in all your ends.
Just weaving it back and forth.
Weave in one way.
And weave it back the other way. And if you cut it too short
then you can come back with the end of your needle
and still weave it in.
And weave in the rest of your ends.
And here we have it. We've got our front square sewed together.
Our back square sewed together. And of course the bottom.
Our sides.
And now we're all ready for the next stage.
Well, you now know how to sew your granny squares together.
And we just happen to be making a little bag.
So we've sewed that long strip. Folded it up together. And we've got the front and the back.
On the next video I will be showing you how I do
a border on the top part of the bag here. And make the handles. And if I've got enough time I will do a lining as well.
Just remember that if you don't know how to do the beginning part of this bag
I've got the links to those videos. So it's easy for you to find.
The first one is on how to make the granny square. The second one is how to block the granny squares.
And the third one sewing together.
So keep your notification bells on so you don't miss the next video.
Until then, bye-bye.
