Save Soil Movement
Launched by Sadhguru, Save Soil is the world's largest people's movement, reaching 3.91 billion people to address impending soil extinction by supporting governments to create policies for soil revitalization.
Sadhguru discusses the symbolism of Ganapati, clarifying that while his large stomach is often associated with feasting, his large head represents supreme intelligence. Through the story of Kubera, he explains how Ganapati taught the wealthy yaksha the insignificance of material riches, emphasizing that true obstacles are removed through a balanced disposition and sharp intellect.
Sadhguru chants Ganesh Chaturthi
After Ganesh Chaturthi, are you all healthy?
You are always wonderful.
So, lot of people fall sick after Ganesh Chaturthi,
especially when Gauri and Ganesh come together,
lots of eating, you know.
This is a bit of a misunderstanding,
little bit of misunderstanding.
There is some truth to it.
Ganapati had a big stomach,
but he had a bigger head.
People ignore the head and only notice the stomach.
Why the stomach became so big
is because you've heard of Kubera.
Those who are little bit conscious of the Indian civilization or languages,
if you utter the word Kubera, that means a very rich or wealthy person.
That is the name of a person, but it's become synonymous with wealth.
He was a yaksha.
Yaksha, there are many interpretations to it.
They were supposed to be tree people.
They lived in the forest.
There is also the legend goes that yakshas were not of this planet.
They came from elsewhere.
So, they didn't have a full human form.
They were little different, just like you.
Aren't each one of you different?
You always think the other guy is distorted.
So, Kubera gained enormous amount of wealth
because of his extraterrestrial skills and intelligence.
He was considered to be the wealthiest man on the planet at that time,
at least in the known part of the world here.
And he is a devotee of Shiva,
but he thinks he is a great devotee.
Like many people come and say,
Sadhguru, I'm your greatest devotee.
I said, all right, you're greater than me, what can I do?
I never thought I'm greatest to anything.
Devotee is good because devotee means who is in the process of dissolution.
A great devotee is a big problem.
So, he is a great devotee.
And every day, whenever he comes to Shiva,
he brings diamonds, jewelry, clothes.
Shiva says, I wear ash, not jewels, not gold, not diamonds.
Ash is my jewelry.
Ash is my decoration.
Ash is my everything.
So, why are you bringing this?
And he just pushes it aside.
He brings all kinds of food,
all kinds of anything and everything that a man can decorate himself with.
Shiva doesn't even look at it because he is ashmed.
Because he continuously goes on bothering him with his wealth.
See, if nobody is watching, you don't offer big things.
Everybody should be watching.
When you offer a heap of diamonds,
you also look if everybody is paying attention to what you offer.
So, Shiva said, you really want to offer something to me.
You do one thing, you take my boy.
Ganapati was sitting here.
You take him, he likes to eat.
Feed him till he is fulfilled.
With great enthusiasm, no problem, I'll feed your boy till he is full.
Not just in the stomach, everywhere.
If you fill your stomach too much, slowly it fills up everywhere, you know.
So, he took him home.
He has a palatial house.
Ganapati went barefoot, his feet walking in the mud.
He left footprints in the marble floor and went.
Kubera saw that his palace, fine marble, this guy is leaving mud puddles and going.
So, he had servants cleaning up behind him.
Ganapati walked all around the house looking, leaving footprints.
Right behind him, people were cleaning up.
Then he sat down for the meal.
They served variety of things, he ate.
Then he looked up.
They again cooked and served, he ate.
Everything in the house was over, they went shopping.
They bought everything that was there and cooked.
He ate and ate and ate.
They purchased every food item that was there in the town and cooked.
But he ate and he was still looking up, okay.
Why are you stopping… stop serving me?
Serve me.
So, Kubera said, the way you're eating, it's not healthy.
He said, you don't worry about my health.
He said, your stomach may burst.
So, he tied a snake around his belly.
You don't worry about my belly, please bring food.
Kubera sold all his wealth and served food, but he ate it up.
Then he realized, this is Shiva's way of teaching him that his wealth is nothing for him.
So, he fell at Ganapati's feet and then went and fell at Shiva's feet.
And in many ways, he got transformed.
So, this example people are taking and on the festival day,
I don't think they made kadavu or kudamu or modakam in the ashram, did they?
They did.
I don't know what they put inside,
but there is a way to do it in such a way that it's hard to stop eating.
I don't know how they did it, but…
So, big stomach became symbolic of Ganapati.
But people forgot that he is referred to as Vigneshwara.
Vigneshwara means one who removes all obstacles.
Removing all obstacles means the fools in the world,
people who are half-brain, they think, tch, all obstacles will go.
A sharp intelligence and a balanced disposition will remove every obstacle.
This is the example of Ganapati.
He is a ghana, his head is ghana at least.
He is of immense intelligence and his intelligence is eulogized in so many ways.
When he wrote, when Vyasa wanted to dictate,
Ganapati said, if you stop, you must continuously dictate.
If you stop for a moment, I'll throw my pen and go.
He is impatient.
Intelligence and impatience are always together.
Said, if you give a little bit of break, I will throw my pen and go.
You must speak continuously, I will write.
So, Vyasa prepared himself and he…
a kind of non-stop exposition of what he had to say and Ganapati wrote down
and people had never seen another being of that intelligence.
So, he became Vigneshwara, not because there is one mantra, tch,
because intelligence and balance,
a balanced disposition and a sharp intellect will clear anything.
So, instead of looking at the head, because people looked at the stomach,
a festival became about becoming a feast.
It's a festival.
You know the difference between a festival and a feast?
Feast is for this.
Festival is for all, everything that is there.
It's a celebration of life.
So, Ganapati became famous and the artists and the sculptors made the stomach bigger and bigger and bigger
because probably their own stomachs were that big.
They wanted to… because they loved him so much, they wanted to give a little bigger stomach.
So, yesterday was a… not every year it happens that Gauri,
Ganapati's mother, first day is her day, next day is his day,
but these two days fell on top of each other yesterday.
So, it's a very significant thing that both Gauri and Ganesh,
because for Gauri it is one kind of sweet making, for Ganapati another kind.
On this day, in most homes, they make both kinds.
So, I thought you may be sick and this boy didn't get it, so he's crying.
He came today.
You have questions, please?
